How Many Days Are Enough for Chopta and Tungnath? (The Honest Truth)

Introduction

If you're asking yourself how many days are enough for Chopta and Tungnath, you're likely trying to squeeze this Himalayan gem into a tight weekend or planning a longer Uttarakhand road trip. After leading countless treks here, I can tell you straight up: 3 days and 2 nights is the absolute sweet spot.

Can you do it in 2 days? Sure, if you love spending 12 hours driving and rushing up a mountain on pure adrenaline. But if you actually want to soak in the views of Chaukhamba and Nanda Devi without feeling like you're running a marathon, give it three days.

Let's break down why 3 days works best, what your itinerary should look like, and how to avoid the logistical nightmares that catch most travelers off guard.

Quick Facts About Chopta and Tungnath

Chopta sits at an elevation of roughly 2,680 meters (8,790 feet) in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. It's famously known as the 'Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand' due to its vast meadows and evergreen forests.

Tungnath, just a few kilometers up the trail, holds the title of the highest Shiva temple in the world at 3,680 meters (12,073 feet). If you push just one kilometer further past Tungnath, you'll hit Chandrashila Peak at 4,000 meters.

• Base Camp for Tungnath: Chopta
• Tungnath Trek Length: 3.5 km one way from Chopta
• Chandrashila Extension: Additional 1.5 km from Tungnath
• Ideal Duration: 3 Days / 2 Nights

Best Time to Visit

Timing your trip makes or breaks the experience. Chopta is accessible year-round, but what you see changes dramatically by season.

Spring (April to June) brings blooming rhododendrons and clear skies. Monsoon (July to August) gets slippery, though the meadows turn an unreal shade of green. Winter (December to March) blankets the region in heavy snow, often closing the Tungnath trek route past Chopta, forcing you to trek through deep powder.

Pro Tip: If you want to see the meadows covered in wildflowers, plan your trip for late May or early June.

How to Reach Chopta and Tungnath

Getting to Chopta requires patience. There is no direct rail or air connectivity.

• By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, roughly 210 km away. From the airport, you can hire a cab or take a shared taxi to Chopta via Rishikesh, Devprayag, and Rudraprayag.
• By Train: Rishikesh Railway Station is the closest major railhead, located about 190 km from Chopta.
• By Road: Driving from Delhi takes around 10 to 12 hours (approx. 400 km). You'll take NH 334 through Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Srinagar, and Rudraprayag before heading toward Ukimath and Chopta.

Getting Around

Once you arrive in Chopta, you won't need a vehicle for local exploration because everything centers around the trek.

For getting to Chopta from Rishikesh or Dehradun, hiring a private cab (Dzire or Ertiga) costs between ₹4,000 to ₹5,000 per day. Shared jeeps run from Rudraprayag or Ukimath to Chopta, but they operate on unpredictable schedules and fill up fast.

Top Things to Do

• Trek to Tungnath Temple: The 3.5 km trek from Chopta is moderate and paved with stone pathways most of the way. Take your time to manage the altitude gain.
• Summit Chandrashila Peak: Don't stop at Tungnath. Push past the temple for another hour to reach the Chandrashila summit for a 360-degree panorama of the Greater Himalayas.
• Stargazing in Chopta: Because Chopta lacks heavy light pollution, night skies here are phenomenal for astrophotography.
• Bird Watching: Chopta is a paradise for bird lovers. Keep your binoculars ready for Himalayan monals, thrushes, and warblers.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Most tourists stick strictly to the Chopta-Tungnath trail. If you have extra time, head down to Deoria Tal.

Located near Sari village (about 45 minutes from Chopta by road), Deoria Tal is a pristine high-altitude lake that mirrors Chaukhamba peak on a clear morning. The 2.5 km trek from Sari village to the lake is gorgeous and sees a fraction of the footfall that Tungnath gets.

Pro Tip: Camp overnight near Deoria Tal instead of just doing a day visit. Watching the sunrise hit the lake surface is unforgettable.

Accommodation Guide

Chopta isn't a bustling town with luxury hotels. Accommodations lean heavily toward eco-resorts, Swiss tents, and homestays.

• Swiss Camps: Permanent tented camps with attached bathrooms. Best for experiencing nature without sacrificing basic comfort.
• Homestays: Found mostly in Sari village or closer to Ukimath. Great for home-cooked Garhwali meals and local interactions.
• GMVN Rest House: Government-run tourist lodge in Chopta. Reliable, clean, but books out months in advance.

Where to Eat

Options for dining in Chopta are simple and rustic. Don't expect upscale cafes.

• Small Dhabas along the Trek: You'll find tea stalls run by locals selling Maggi, boiled eggs, parathas, and hot chai.
• Local Eateries in Chopta Market: Basic vegetarian thalis, rajma chawal, and momos.
• Must-Try Local Food: Kafula (a spinach-based green curry) and Mandua ki Roti (finger millet flatbread).

Packing Checklist

Packing right is critical for mountain weather that shifts in minutes.

• Footwear: Sturdy waterproof trekking shoes with good grip.
• Clothing: Thermal innerwear, fleece jacket, windproof outer jacket, and quick-dry trousers.
• Gear: Trekking poles, 20-30L backpack, reusable water bottle, headlamp or flashlight.
• Medicines: Altitude sickness meds (Diamox, consult a doctor first), personal band-aids, ORS packets, and painkillers.

Common Mistake: Packing heavy denim jeans and sneakers. Jeans get soaked instantly, don't dry in mountain air, and freeze in the cold.

Nearby Attractions

• Ukimath: The winter seat of Lord Kedarnath, located 30 km from Chopta.
• Kanchula Korak Musk Deer Sanctuary: A forested wildlife sanctuary located right on the Chopta-Rishikesh route.
• Rohini Bugyal: A lesser-known meadow trail near Chandrashila for solitude seekers.
