I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve driven past Haridwar and climbed the winding roads into the Garhwal Himalayas. Traveling from Delhi to Kedarnath isn't just a road trip; it's a test of endurance, patience, and absolute awe.

Whether you're packing your bags for a spiritual pilgrimage or a high-altitude trek, planning the logistics makes all the difference. Let's break down the exact routes, costs, and practical steps you need to get from the capital streets of Delhi to the holy gates of Kedarnath.

Quick Facts About How to Reach Kedarnath from Delhi

• Total Distance: ~450 km to Sonprayag (road) + 18-20 km trek.
• Starting Point: New Delhi / ISBT Kashmere Gate.
• Ending Point for Vehicles: Sonprayag (or Gaurikund).
• Primary Trek Route: Gaurikund - Jungle Chatti - Rambara - Garurchatti - Kedarnath Base.

Best Time to Visit

The Kedarnath shrine opens annually on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya (usually late April or May) and closes on Bhai Dooj (late October or November).

Avoid July and August completely due to heavy monsoon downpours and high landslide risks along the Alaknanda and Mandakini corridors.

How to Reach How to Reach Kedarnath from Delhi

You can't drive your vehicle all the way to the temple. Your journey involves two parts: Delhi to Sonprayag (by road, air, or bus) and Sonprayag to Kedarnath (on foot, pony, or helicopter).

1. By Road (Cab or Self-Drive)

Take the NH 334 out of Delhi via Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Roorkee, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and reach Sonprayag. The distance is roughly 450 km and takes 13 to 15 hours depending on traffic.

2. By Bus

Take a regular Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (UTC) or private Volvo bus from ISBT Kashmere Gate to Rishikesh or Rudraprayag. From Rishikesh, catch local government buses or shared jeeps heading to Sonprayag.

3. By Air + Road

Fly from Delhi (DEL) to Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport (DED). From the airport, hire a direct cab to Sonprayag (210 km, ~7-8 hours) or book a chartered helicopter from Dehradun's Sahastradhara helipad directly to Kedarnath.

Pro Tip: If driving yourself, check your vehicle brake pads and fluids before leaving Rishikesh. The climb puts severe stress on clutches and brakes.

Getting Around

Once you reach Sonprayag, private cars are barred. You must take a local shared shuttle (Sumo/Bolero) for the 2 km stretch to Gaurikund, which costs around ₹50 per person.

From Gaurikund, your options to reach the 3,583-meter high shrine are:

• Trekking on foot (18 km)
• Hiring a pony (ghoda)
• Palki (palanquin)
• Dandi or Pithoo (porters carrying luggage or people)
• Helicopter from Phata, Sersi, or Guptkashi

Top Things to Do

• Attend the Evening Aarti: Stand in front of the illuminated stone temple as the priests perform the Sandhya Aarti.
• Visit Shankaracharya Samadhi: Located just behind the main temple, pay respects at the final resting place of Adi Shankaracharya.
• Explore Bhairavnath Temple: A short 1 km uphill trek from Kedarnath rewards you with sweeping views of the valley and protection from the fierce deity.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

• Vasuki Tal: A high-altitude glacial lake situated 8 km beyond Kedarnath at an altitude of 4,135 meters. Only recommended for seasoned trekkers with proper acclimatization.
• Garurchatti: A peaceful campsite along the trekking route where fewer tourists stop, offering incredible starry night skies.

Accommodation Guide

Finding a place to stay requires advance planning, especially in May, June, and September.

• In Sonprayag/Guptkashi: Stay at GMVN Tourist Rest House or private hotels like Hotel Mandakini.
• In Kedarnath: GMVN tents, dormitories, and private guest houses operate near the helipad and temple. Book weeks in advance through official portals.

Where to Eat

Do not expect luxury dining on the trek. Food is strictly vegetarian and largely satvik (without garlic and onion in many dhabas).

• Sita Dhaba (Jungle Chatti): Perfect for hot ginger tea and maggi noodles midway up the trek.
• Local Dhabas at Gaurikund: Try hot parathas and dal chawal before starting your ascent.
