Jim Corbett 2-Day Itinerary: Safari, Stay & Complete Travel Plan

Introduction

Most weekend travelers mess up their Jim Corbett trip because they treat it like a standard hill station holiday. They book a random resort near Ramnagar, skip safari permit bookings until they arrive, and end up driving around buffer zones seeing nothing. I’ve made those mistakes so you don’t have to.

Over the last decade, I've tracked wildlife across India's oldest national park multiple times. This 2-day itinerary gives you the exact blueprint to maximize tiger sighting odds, secure the best safari zones like Dhikala or Bijrani, and enjoy comfortable stays without getting fleeced by local middlemen.

Quick Facts About Jim Corbett

Established in 1936 as Hailey National Park, this sanctuary spans over 520 square kilometers of hills, riverine belts, grasslands, and large lake reservoirs. It's India’s first tiger reserve and holds one of the highest densities of Royal Bengal Tigers in the world.

• Location: Nainital and Pauri Garhwal districts, Uttarakhand
• Primary Wildlife: Royal Bengal Tigers, Asian Elephants, leopards, spotted deer, and over 600 bird species
• Entry Gate Hub: Ramnagar (town)
• Core Zones: Dhikala, Bijrani, Jhirna, Dhela, Phato, and Garjiya

Pro Tip: Don't confuse the entire national park with Ramnagar town. Ramnagar is just the gateway; the actual wildlife zones lie deeper inside the forest.

Best Time to Visit

Timing makes or breaks your Corbett experience. The park is divided into zones that open at different times of the year due to monsoon damage and safety regulations.

• Winter (November to February): Crisp mornings, foggy safaris, and excellent bird watching. Tiger sightings are common as animals sunbathe in the open grasslands.
• Summer (March to June): Scorching afternoons, but your absolute best chance to spot tigers and elephants near waterholes.
• Monsoon (July to October): Most safari zones close completely because wooden bridges wash away. Only Jhirna and Dhela remain open for jeep safaris.

Weather Guide

How to Reach Jim Corbett

Getting to Jim Corbett is straightforward if you're coming from northern India.

• By Road: The 260 km drive from Delhi takes about 5.5 to 6 hours via NH9 through Hapur, Moradabad, and Kashipur. Roads are mostly four-lane until Moradabad.
• By Train: Ranikhet Express runs daily from Old Delhi Railway Station (DLI) to Ramnagar (RMR), arriving early morning around 5:00 AM. This is the most reliable transit option.
• By Air: Pantnagar Airport (PGH) is the closest airport, roughly 85 km away, though flights are limited. Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) in New Delhi is the primary international hub.

Getting Around

Once you reach Ramnagar, public transport inside the forest zones doesn't exist. You must rely on pre-booked gypsy safaris, resort rental cars, or auto-rickshaws for local town commutes.

• Safari Gypsies: Registered 4x4 Maruti Gypsy vehicles are mandatory for entry into core zones. Resort staff can arrange these, or you can book via the official Uttarakhand forest department portal.
• Local Taxis: Private cab services in Ramnagar charge around ₹2,500 to ₹3,500 per day for station transfers and sightseeing.

Top Things to Do

Day 1: Arrival, River Walk & Afternoon Jeep Safari

• 06:00 AM – 11:30 AM: Arrive in Ramnagar via the Ranikhet Express or overnight cab. Check into your resort, unpack, and grab a quick breakfast of poori-sabzi at a local dhaba.
• 12:30 PM – 03:00 PM: Head to the Garjiya Devi Temple, perched on a massive rock in the middle of the Kosi River. It's a peaceful spot with rushing river waters surrounding it.
• 03:00 PM – 06:00 PM: Board your afternoon Jeep Safari in the Bijrani Zone. Bijrani has an open topography that offers fantastic visibility for spotting leopards and tigers.

Day 2: Morning Deep-Forest Safari & Departure

• 06:00 AM – 09:30 AM: Early morning is prime predator time. Take a jeep safari in the Jhirna or Dhela Zone, known for wild elephant herds and sloth bears.
• 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM: Return to your resort for a hearty breakfast and check out.
• 12:00 PM – 02:00 PM: Visit the Corbett Museum at Dhangarhi—the former home of hunter-turned-conservationist Jim Corbett. It displays his personal belongings, old firearms, and letters.
• 02:30 PM onwards: Head back to Delhi or your onward destination.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Want to escape the Jeep safari crowds? Check out these lesser-known spots:

• Sitabani Forest Reserve: While technically outside the main national park jurisdiction, Sitabani offers elephant safaris and beautiful walking trails through dense Sal forests where tigers are occasionally sighted.
• Kosi Barrage Backwaters: A quiet wetland area near Ramnagar perfect for evening birdwatching without paying park entry fees. Look out for river terns and kingfishers.

Accommodation Guide

Choosing where to stay depends entirely on your safari preference. If you managed to snag a coveted Dhirala Forest Rest House (FRH) permit, stay inside the park. Otherwise, pick a resort along the Kosi River belt.

• Budget: Camp Hornbill (₹2,500 - ₹4,000/night) - Eco-friendly cottages near the river.
• Mid-Range: Aahana The Corbett Wilderness (₹8,000 - ₹12,000/night) - Fantastic sustainable luxury resort with great food.
• Luxury: Taj Corbett Resort & Spa (₹18,000+/night) - Premium riverfront luxury with world-class naturalists.

Where to Eat

Jim Corbett is not a gourmet food destination, but local Kumaoni flavors and hearty North Indian dhaba food hit the spot after a dusty safari.

• Dhaba 10: Located on the Ramnagar-Corbett highway, famous for piping hot parathas and ginger tea.
• Patal Bhuni at Aahana Resort: Try traditional Kumaoni thalis featuring Bhatt ki Churkani (black soybean curry) and Dubuk (lentil paste).
• The Village Diner: A casual spot in Ramnagar town serving wood-fired pizzas and continental bites if you want a break from Indian cuisine.

Budget Breakdown

Packing Checklist

• Dull-colored clothing (olive green, khaki, brown) to blend into the forest.
• Dust mask or a cotton scarf—safari tracks get extremely dusty.
• Binoculars and a telephoto lens camera (smartphones struggle with distant wildlife).
• Sturdy walking shoes and woolens for chilly winter mornings.
• Sunscreen, insect repellent, and personal medications.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Booking resort packages that promise tiger sightings. No guide or hotel can guarantee wildlife behavior. Book safaris for the experience, not just a photo.

• Do not wear bright neon colors or use strong perfumes on safaris; it agitates wildlife.
• Never step down from your safari jeep unless your guide explicitly tells you it is safe at a designated watchtower.
• Keep plastic trash with you; littering inside the tiger reserve attracts heavy legal penalties.

Nearby Attractions

If you have an extra day to spare, extend your trip to these nearby locations:

• Nainital: A classic hill station built around a mango-shaped lake, just 65 km north of Ramnagar.
• Ranikhet: Peaceful cantonment town known for Himalayan views and old golf courses, roughly 85 km away.
