Kanatal Travel Guide: Camping, Adventure Activities & Best Time to Visit

Introduction

If you're tired of bumper-to-bumper traffic in Mussoorie and commercialized cafes in Nainital, Kanatal is the exact antidote you've been looking for. I first visited this tiny hamlet five years ago when a local photographer friend told me about its unobstructed views of the snow-capped Garhwal Himalayas. Back then, you could barely find three homestays. Today, it’s evolved into a fantastic hub for offbeat camping and outdoor adventure without losing its quiet charm.

Unlike its crowded hill station neighbors, Kanatal sits at an elevation of 8,500 feet, wrapped in thick pine, oak, and deodar forests. It's not a place for packed itineraries and sightseeing buses. It's a place where you wake up to bird calls, spend your afternoon hiking through apple orchards, and your nights stargazing by a campfire. Let's dive straight into the ultimate guide to making the most of your Kanatal trip.

Quick Facts About Kanatal

• State: Uttarakhand, India
• District: Tehri Garhwal
• Elevation: 2,593 meters (8,507 feet)
• Distance from Dehradun: 78 km
• Distance from Delhi: 320 km
• Best Known For: Pine forests, apple orchards, quiet camping, and Tehri Lake water sports.

Best Time to Visit

Choosing when to go depends entirely on what you want to experience. If you love bone-chilling cold and want to see snow piling up on your tent, plan your trip between January and February. For pleasant weather and clear blue skies, March to June is ideal.

Monsoon (July to September) brings dramatic mist, roaring waterfalls, and lush greenery, but landslides can occasionally disrupt travel plans. October to December marks the arrival of crisp autumn air and glittering night skies.

Weather Guide

Pro Tip: If you want peace and quiet, avoid visiting on long weekends when Delhi traffic spills over into Uttarakhand.

How to Reach Kanatal

Getting to Kanatal is straightforward, whether you're driving or taking public transport.

• By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, located 92 km away. From the airport, you can hire a private taxi for around ₹2,500 to ₹3,500 or take a shared cab to Chamba and change vehicles.
• By Train: Dehradun Railway Station (78 km away) and Rishikesh Railway Station (75 km away) are the closest railheads. Both stations have excellent connectivity to major Indian cities.
• By Road: Kanatal is well-connected by motorable roads. Driving from Delhi takes roughly 7 to 8 hours via Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Roorkee, Dehradun, and Mussoorie (or via Rishikesh and Chamba).

Getting Around

Kanatal is tiny. Once you arrive, you won't need cars or buses to explore the main ridge. Walking is genuinely the best way to soak in the pine scent and spot local birdlife.

For trips to nearby spots like Tehri Lake or Kodia Jungle, hire local jeeps or negotiate a daily rate with a local taxi driver. Expect to pay around ₹1,500 to ₹2,000 for a half-day sightseeing cab.

Top Things to Do

1. Go Camping Under the Stars

Kanatal is famous for its alpine camps. Waking up inside a Swiss tent with sunlight filtering through pine needles is an unmatched experience. Most campsites offer bonfire nights, barbecue, and indoor games.

2. Explore Kodia Jungle

Located about 1 km from the main town, Kodia Jungle is a dense forest reserve. You can hire a guide at the entrance (approx. ₹300) and trek through the trails. Keep your camera ready for barking deer, wild boars, and rare migratory birds.

3. Seek Blessings at Surkanda Devi Temple

Perched at an altitude of 9,700 feet, this is one of the Shaktipeeths. The trek starts from Kaddukhal, which is 6 km from Kanatal. It's a steep 2 km uphill walk, but ropeway options are now available if you prefer a smooth ride (₹500 return ticket).

4. Experience Water Sports at Tehri Lake

Just 32 km down the winding mountain roads lies New Tehri Lake, one of India's premier artificial lakes. Here you can try jet skiing, banana boat rides, kayaking, and even scuba diving when operators are active.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Want to escape the usual tourist trail? Head towards Chamba-Mussoorie road and look for unsigned walking tracks leading down into the apple orchards near Kaudia.

Another secret spot is the Chamba viewpoint during sunrise. While everyone crowds the main Kanatal viewpoints, walk 500 meters further towards the Dhanaulti border around 5:30 AM. You will get uninterrupted views of the sun turning the entire Greater Himalayan range a brilliant shade of orange.

Accommodation Guide

Kanatal offers everything from rustic eco-lodges to luxury dome tents.

• Camping: Camp Carnival Kanatal and Himalayan Camp offer fantastic tented stays with modern amenities.
• Mid-Range Resorts: The Terraces and Club Mahindra Kanatal provide comfortable rooms, indoor heating, and great valley views.
• Homestays: Check out local village homestays if you want to experience authentic Garhwali hospitality and home-cooked pahadi meals.

Where to Eat (Local Food Guide)

Kanatal isn't a bustling culinary hub, but local eateries serve hearty, wholesome food that hits the spot after a cold trek.

• The Devbhoomi Restaurant: Great for basic North Indian thalis and piping hot parathas.
• Local Dhabas in Chamba Market: Just 12 km away, stop by for fresh Jhangora ki Kheer (barnyard millet pudding) and Aalu ke Gutke.
• Resort Cafes: If you're craving continental food, cafes inside properties like The Terraces serve decent wood-fired pizzas and espresso.

Packing Checklist

Don't let the mountain weather catch you off guard. Pack these essentials:

• Clothing: Thermal innerwear, fleece jackets, windproof outer shells, and sturdy trekking boots.
• Accessories: UV-protection sunglasses, woolen beanies, gloves, and a high-capacity power bank (batteries drain fast in the cold).
• First Aid: Motion sickness pills for the winding roads, band-aids, basic painkillers, and personal medications.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Many travelers assume Kanatal stays warm because it's in Uttarakhand. Temperatures drop sharply after sunset even in May, so always pack warm layers.

• Drive carefully on mountain hairpins; avoid night driving if you're not used to hill roads.
• Carry cash. UPI works in main shops, but remote campsites often face network outages.
• Respect local wildlife and stick to marked trekking trails.

Nearby Attractions

• Dhanaulti: 12 km away, famous for eco-parks and quiet walks.
• Chamba: 12 km away, a bustling market town with great panoramic vistas.
• New Tehri: 32 km away, your go-to spot for lake adventures.
