Kedarnath and Tungnath: Can You Cover Both in One Trip?

Introduction

Ever stared at a map of the Garhwal Himalayas and wondered if you can knock out two of the Panch Kedar shrines in one go? You definitely can. I have done it, and watching sunrise from Tungnath just three days after standing before the majestic Kedarnath temple is an experience that stays with you forever.

Most travelers assume these two holy sites require separate vacations because they sit on different ridges separated by deep river valleys. But with a smart, tightly packed 4-to-5-day itinerary, your dream dual-pilgrimage is entirely doable. Let us break down how to pull it off without burning out.

Quick Facts About Kedarnath and Tungnath

Kedarnath sits at an altitude of 3,583 meters (11,755 feet) alongside the Mandakini River, featuring a grueling 16-kilometer trek from Gaurikund. It is one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.

Tungnath sits even higher at 3,680 meters (12,073 feet), holding the title of the highest Shiva temple in the world. Unlike Kedarnath's punishing path, the trek to Tungnath starts from Chopta and spans a much friendlier 3.5 kilometers.

Pro Tip: Never underestimate the altitude gain. Even though Tungnath is a short walk, starting from Chopta means you are already climbing above 2,900 meters immediately.

Best Time to Visit

The window for visiting both temples is dictated by Himalayan weather. The ideal periods are May to June (before monsoon hits) and September to October (after monsoon clears).

Avoid July and August completely. Landslides along the Rudraprayag-Kedarnath highway and the Chopta-Ukhimath route can leave you stranded for days. Temple gates typically open in April/May during Akshaya Tritiya and close around Diwali in November.

How to Reach Kedarnath and Tungnath

Your journey starts from Rishikesh or Haridwar, the transit hubs for Char Dham yatra. From Rishikesh, hire a shared cab or a private taxi to Gaurikund, which is about 210 kilometers away and takes roughly 7 to 8 hours.

After finishing Kedarnath, your transit to Tungnath requires heading back down to Guptkashi or Phata, then driving up via Ukhimath to Chopta. The drive from Gaurikund/Sonprayag area to Chopta takes about 3 hours over 70 kilometers of winding mountain roads.

Getting Around

Local transport relies heavily on shared Mahindra Bolero jeeps, private cabs, and state-run GMVN buses. While buses are cheap, they run on fixed, unreliable schedules. Renting a reliable SUV with an experienced mountain driver from Rishikesh is your best bet for keeping a tight schedule.

Once you reach the trailheads (Gaurikund and Chopta), your own two feet are the primary mode of transport. For Kedarnath, options like ponies, palkis (palanquins), and helicopter services (from Phata, Guptkashi, or Sirsi) are available if you need physical assistance.

Top Things to Do

• Attend the Evening Aarti at Kedarnath: Find a spot near the temple courtyard just as dusk falls and the valley echoes with devotional chants.
• Trek to Chandrashila Peak: Do not stop at Tungnath. Push another 1.5 kilometers uphill to reach Chandrashila at 4,000 meters for a 360-degree panorama of Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Chaukhamba peaks.
• Bath in the Hot Springs at Gaurikund: Stop by the natural sulfur springs before heading up the Kedarnath trail to soothe your tired muscles.
• Bird Watching in Chopta: Chopta is often called the 'Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand'. Spend an evening looking for Himalayan monals in the surrounding oak and rhododendron forests.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Most tourists rush through Ukhimath, but you should stop at Omkareshwar Temple, the winter seat of Kedarnath. It is peaceful, historically rich, and entirely free of tourist congestion.

Another hidden gem is Deoria Tal, a pristine high-altitude lake located just a short detour from Mastura village near Chopta. The reflection of Chaukhamba peak in its emerald waters at sunrise beats any postcard.

Accommodation Guide

Accommodations range from basic GMVN tent colonies to budget guesthouses. Booking in advance is non-negotiable during peak season.

Where to Eat

Mountain food is simple, wholesome, and designed to keep you warm. Stick to vegetarian local dhabas serving piping hot Rajma Chawal, Aloo Jeera, and Dal Tadka.

• Himalayan Dhaba (Gaurikund): Great for a quick pre-trek paratha and sweet chai.
• Chopta Eco-Resort Dining Hall: Serves surprisingly fresh organic pahadi thalis featuring local millet rotis and nettle soup (Kandali saag).
• GMVN Cafeteria (Kedarnath): Reliable, hygienic meals right near the shrine complex.

Budget Breakdown

Here is what a standard 4-day, 3-night trip covering both spots looks like for a solo traveler or couple sharing costs.

Packing Checklist

Packing for two different high-altitude mountain climates requires layering:

• Waterproof trekking boots with good ankle grip
• Thermal innerwear (at least 2 sets)
• Heavy fleece jacket and a down/feather windproof jacket
• Rain poncho or waterproof shell
• Trekking pole (saves your knees on the descent)
• Basic medical kit with Diamox (for altitude sickness), band-aids, and ORS
• Reusable water bottle and high-calorie energy bars

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Skipping acclimatization. Many travelers drive straight from Rishikesh to Gaurikund, sleep at 2,000m, and immediately climb to 3,500m. This triggers acute mountain sickness (AMS).

• Always register your yatra online via the Uttarakhand Tourism portal before arrival.
• Keep your ID proof handy at multiple police checkpoints along the route.
• Stay hydrated, but avoid alcohol completely throughout the trip.

Nearby Attractions

If you have an extra day to spare, consider visiting:

• Ukhimath: The winter winter capital of Kedarnath and Madhyamaheshwar.
• Kalimath: One of the Shakti Peeths, deeply tied to the Mahabharata.
• Rohini Bugyal: A stunning alpine meadow near Deoria Tal that few tourists ever reach.
