Kedarnath and Badrinath 5-Day Itinerary: Route, Cost & Travel Plan

Introduction

Let’s be honest right out of the gate. Packing both Kedarnath and Badrinath into a strict 5-day window is exhausting. You’re talking about massive mountain passes, winding roads, a 16-kilometer trek up to Kedarnath, and thousands of fellow pilgrims moving at the same pace. But if you’ve only got five days off work, it’s entirely possible. I’ve run this exact circuit multiple times, and I’ve refined the pacing so you don't spend the whole trip staring out a car window.

Most travel blogs give you fluff. They tell you to 'enjoy the majestic peaks' without mentioning that you’ll spend four hours stuck in traffic near Rudraprayag if you don't leave your hotel by 4:00 AM. In this guide, I’m dropping the sugar-coating. You’ll get exact INR costs, realistic driving times from Dehradun or Haridwar, and the logistics you actually need to survive and thrive on the Chardham route.

Quick Facts About Kedarnath and Badrinath

Before we look at the daily breakdown, let’s establish some baseline geography so you know what you’re signing up for. Kedarnath sits at an altitude of 3,583 meters (11,755 feet) in the Rudraprayag district, while Badrinath sits slightly lower at 3,133 meters (10,279 feet) in Chamoli.

Pro Tip: Don't underestimate the altitude. Start doing light cardio at least three weeks before your trip to save your lungs on the Kedarnath climb.

Best Time to Visit

The windows for the Himalayan shrines are dictated by the Hindu calendar, usually opening in late April or May (Akshaya Tritiya) and closing around late October or November (Bhai Dooj).

If you want the best weather, target May-June or September-October. July and August bring heavy monsoon rains, causing frequent landslides along the Alaknanda and Mandakini river corridors. Roadblocks can easily swallow a day of your tight 5-day schedule.

Weather Guide

How to Reach [topic]

Your journey starts in Dehradun or Haridwar. Dehradun features Jolly Grant Airport (DED), while Haridwar and Rishikesh boast massive rail connectivity from Delhi.

• Day 0 / Arrival: Arrive in Haridwar or Rishikesh by evening. Rent a private cab (Inzo, Ertiga, or similar UV) for the 5-day circuit. Expect to pay ₹22,000 to ₹28,000 for a dedicated vehicle for the entire round trip.
• Route Blueprint:
• Day 1: Haridwar/Rishikesh to Guptkashi / Sonprayag (approx. 205 km, 7-8 hours).
• Day 2: Sonprayag to Kedarnath (16 km trek / Heli, stay overnight at Kedarnath).
• Day 3: Kedarnath down to Sonprayag, drive to Joshimath or Pipalkoti (approx. 140 km, 6 hours).
• Day 4: Pipalkoti/Joshimath to Badrinath and back to Chamoli/Rudraprayag (approx. 85 km one way, heavy traffic zones).
• Day 5: Return drive from Rudraprayag back to Rishikesh/Dehradun (approx. 140 km, 5-6 hours).

Getting Around

Forget public buses if you’re doing this in five days; they are far too slow and unreliable on mountain switchbacks. Rent a private cab with an experienced mountain driver. Local drivers know every shortcut around bottleneck zones like Joshimath and Nandprayag.

For the Kedarnath stretch, you have three choices: walk the 16 km trail, hire a pony/palanqui (dandi/kandi) at Gaurikund, or book a helicopter ride from Phata, Guptkashi, or Sersi. Helicopter tickets cost roughly ₹7,000 to ₹9,000 return per person and must be booked weeks in advance via the IRCTC HeliYatra portal.

Top Things to Do

• Attend the Evening Maha Aarti at Kedarnath: Stand right behind the ancient stone temple as temple priests light hundreds of oil lamps against the backdrop of the illuminated Kedar dome.
• Take a Holy Dip in the Tapt Kund: Located right by the Badrinath temple, this natural thermal sulfur spring is a must-visit before entering the main sanctum.
• Explore Mana Village: Just 3 km past Badrinath, this is India’s last village before the Tibet border. Grab tea at 'India’s Last Tea Stall' and check out Vyas Gufa where the Mahabharata was reportedly dictated.
• Pay Homage at Bhairavnath Temple: A steep 500-meter climb past Kedarnath temple rewards you with panoramic valley views and the shrine of Kedar's fierce guardian.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

• Vasuki Tal: If you miraculously have an extra day (or pace yourself well), a grueling 8 km trek from Kedarnath brings you to this high-altitude glacial lake at 4,150 meters.
• Charan Paduka: A rocky meadow a 2 km steep trek above Badrinath where footprints of Lord Vishnu are believed to be imprinted on a boulder. It's blissfully quiet compared to the main temple courtyard.

Accommodation Guide

Finding a place to sleep is straightforward, but comfort levels drop sharply the higher you go.

• Guptkashi / Sonprayag: Decent hotels and guest houses like Hotel Mandakini or GMVN Tourist Rest House. Prices range from ₹2,000 to ₹4,500 per night.
• Kedarnath: Options are basic. You can stay in GMVN Swiss tents, private lodges, or government dormitories. Bookings open via the Uttarakhand tourism website months ahead. Expect dormitory beds for ₹600 or basic rooms for ₹2,500.
• Pipalkoti / Joshimath: Better hotel options with running hot water and Wi-Fi. Hotel Mount View in Pipalkoti is a reliable pitstop.

Where to Eat

Don’t expect fine dining on this route. You’ll be fueled by piping hot North Indian thalis, Maggi noodles, parathas, and endless cups of ginger tea.

• Pandukeshwar (near Badrinath): Stop at local roadside dhabas for fresh aloo parathas with white butter.
• Sonprayag Bazaar: Grab a quick dinner of Rajma Chawal at Sharma Bhojanalaya before your early morning trek.

Pro Tip: Stick to vegetarian food throughout the yatra. Most towns on the route are strictly vegetarian, and keeping your diet light prevents altitude-induced digestion issues.

Budget Breakdown (with INR tables)

Here is a realistic budget for two travelers sharing a private cab and mid-range accommodations.

Packing Checklist

Mountain weather shifts in minutes. Pack light, but pack smart.

• Thermal innerwear (2 sets)
• Waterproof windcheater / Gore-Tex jacket
• Sturdy trekking shoes with ankle support (break them in before the trip!)
• Woolen cap, gloves, and thick socks
• Personal medical kit including Diamox (for altitude sickness), band-aids, and ORS sachets
• Power bank (power cuts are common in Kedarnath)

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Forgetting to complete compulsory biometric registration. You cannot cross Sonprayag or Badrinath checkpoints without online or offline Yatra registration via the Uttarakhand Tourism portal.

• Stay Hydrated: Drink at least 3-4 liters of water daily, even if you don't feel thirsty in the cold.
• Pace Yourself: Do not run up the Kedarnath trail. Walk slowly, take 2-minute breathers every 50 steps.

Nearby Attractions

• Tungnath & Chandrashila: If you alter your itinerary to include Chopta, you can hike to the highest Shiva temple in the world.
• Joshimath: The winter seat of Lord Badrinath and gateway to Auli for cable car rides.
