Landour One-Day Itinerary: Cafes, Walks & Viewpoints

Introduction

Most travelers lump Landour in with Mussoorie, treating it like an afterthought. That is a mistake. Landour is quieter, steeper, and wrapped in a thick blanket of pine and deodar trees that completely drowns out the highway noise.

I have spent weeks walking these ridge roads, talking to local bakers, and dodging mischievous langurs. If you only have twenty-four hours to spare, you need a tight plan. This Landour one-day itinerary cuts out the fluff and takes you straight to the best bakeries, silent viewpoints, and colonial-era shortcuts.

Quick Facts About Landour

Landour sits roughly 1,000 feet higher than Mussoorie, making it cooler and significantly less commercialized. It was originally established as a sanitarium for British soldiers in the 1820s.

Best Time to Visit

Landour has distinct seasons, and your experience will change dramatically depending on when you arrive. Spring brings blooming rhododendrons, while autumn offers the crispest mountain views.

Weather Guide

Here is what you can expect month by month. Plan your clothing layers accordingly.

Pro Tip: October and November offer the sharpest, unobstructed views of the snow-capped Greater Himalayas from Lal Tibba.

How to Reach Landour

Landour does not have its own airport or railway station. You must travel through Dehradun and Mussoorie.

• By Air: Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is 60 km away. A taxi from the airport to Landour costs around ₹2,200 to ₹2,800.
• By Train: Dehradun Railway Station is 35 km away. Shared cabs run frequently from outside the station to Mussoorie Library Chowk for about ₹200 to ₹300 per seat.
• By Road: Drive from Delhi via Dehradun takes roughly 6 to 7 hours. Once you reach Mussoorie's Library Chowk, hire a local Maruti Gypsy or walk up the steep 5 km incline to Landour Bazaar.

Getting Around

Landour is meant to be explored on foot. Cars are a liability here due to extremely narrow roads and zero parking.

• Walking: The absolute best way to see Landour. Most key spots are within a 2-to-3 km radius of Sister's Bazaar.
• Local Cabs: If you have heavy luggage, hire a local Gypsy from Library Chowk to Sister's Bazaar for roughly ₹400 to ₹500.

Common Mistake: Do not attempt to drive a large SUV or low-ground-clearance sedan past Landour Bazaar. The roads turn into single-lane dirt paths with steep hairpin turns.

Top Things to Do

8:00 AM – Sunrise at Lal Tibba

Start your day early at Lal Tibba, the highest point in Landour. Head up to the roof of the old viewing tower (costs around ₹50 to use their heavy-duty Japanese telescope) to spot peaks like Badrinath and Kedarnath on a clear morning.

9:30 AM – Breakfast at Landour Bakehouse

Walk down through the oak forest to Landour Bakehouse near Charleville. Order their signature cinnamon roll and a hot chocolate. Housed in a restored 19th-century building, it captures old-world colonial charm perfectly.

11:30 AM – Explore Sister’s Bazaar and Prakash’s Jam

Stroll through Sister's Bazaar. Stop by Prakash Stores, a tiny multi-purpose shop operating for decades. Buy a jar of their homemade plum jam or rhubarb preserve (prices range from ₹250 to ₹400 per jar).

1:00 PM – Visit St. Paul’s Church

Walk over to St. Paul’s Church, built in 1840. Jim Corbett was actually baptized here. The stained-glass windows and silent graveyard offer a deeply reflective atmosphere.

3:00 PM – A Loop Around Jabarkhet Nature Reserve

Take a short cab ride or hike down to Jabarkhet Nature Reserve, a privately owned forest. Entry costs around ₹350 per person. Hire a naturalist guide at the gate to spot rare ferns, mushrooms, and occasionally barking deer.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

• Charleville Mansion Ruins: Though you cannot always enter the main private property, walking past the decaying arches of this historic mansion where Mark Twain once stayed gives you chills.
• The Kellogg Memorial Church: Located near Landour language school, its striking Gothic architecture makes it one of the most photographed spots untouched by mass tourism.
• Pari Tibba (Hill of Fairies): A short trek away from the main ridge. Locals claim lightning strikes here frequently, giving the forested slopes an eerie, mystical silence.

Accommodation Guide

While this is a one-day itinerary, many travelers choose to stay overnight to catch the sunset over the Doon Valley.

Pro Tip: La Villa Bethany is an award-winning homestay run by an Anglo-Indian family. Book months in advance because they only have a handful of rooms.

Where to Eat (Local Food Guide)

Landour has a surprisingly refined culinary scene, blending British bakery traditions with North Indian comfort food.

• Landour Bakehouse: Must try the chicken pot pie and almond cookies.
• Cafe Ivy: Located near Charleville. Try their wood-fired pizzas and sit on the outdoor deck overlooking the valley.
• Aallam Restaurant: For hearty north Indian meals after a long hike.
• Prakash Stores: Grab fresh cheese cubes (cheddar and gouda) made locally by residents.

Budget Breakdown (with INR Tables)

Here is what a typical day trip to Landour looks like for a solo traveler or couple.

Packing Checklist

• Sturdy hiking boots or walking shoes with good grip.
• Layered clothing (fleece jacket and a windcheater even in summer).
• Reusable water bottle.
• Sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen (UV rays are harsh at 7,200 feet).
• Cash (many small vendors in Sister's Bazaar struggle with digital UPI signals due to spotty cell reception).

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

• Cell Reception: BSNL and Jio work reasonably well, but Airtel frequently drops signal near Lal Tibba.
• Monkey Danger: Do not carry open food packets while walking past Charleville. The local rhesus macaques are bold and aggressive.
• Hydration: Walking uphill at high altitude causes rapid dehydration. Drink electrolytes.
• Common Mistake: Trying to rush through Mussoorie and Landour in the same day using public buses. You will spend 4 hours stuck in traffic and only see tourist parking lots.

Nearby Attractions

• Company Garden, Mussoorie (6 km away)
• Camel’s Back Road (4 km away)
• Kempty Falls (18 km away — warning: usually overcrowded)
