Mussoorie 2-Day Itinerary: Best Places, Food & Travel Plan

Introduction

Most people drive up to Mussoorie from Delhi expecting a quiet mountain getaway, only to spend three hours stuck in a traffic jam near Library Chowk. I've been visiting the 'Queen of the Hills' for over a decade, and I can tell you that the magic is still there—you just have to know when to zig while everyone else zags.

This 2-day itinerary strips away the tourist traps and gives you a realistic, action-packed plan. You'll hit the classic viewpoints early, eat at local spots that have been running for generations, and actually enjoy your weekend without burning out.

Quick Facts About Mussoorie

• State: Uttarakhand, India
• Elevation: 2,005 meters (6,578 feet) above sea level
• Famous For: Colonial architecture, Mall Road walks, panoramic views of the Doon Valley and Himalayan peaks
• Ideal Trip Duration: 2 to 3 days
• Major Language Spoken: Garhwali, Hindi, English

Best Time to Visit

Mussoorie is a year-round destination, but your experience depends entirely on the month you pick. If you want clear mountain views, plan for October to November. If you're chasing snowfall, mid-December to February is your window.

Pro Tip: Avoid weekends between May and July if you hate crowds. The school vacation rush turns the 32 km drive from Dehradun into a parking lot.

Weather Guide

How to Reach Mussoorie

Getting to Mussoorie is straightforward since it acts as the gateway to the Garhwal Himalayas.

• By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, located 60 km away. A prepaid taxi from the airport to Mussoorie costs roughly ₹2,000 to ₹2,500 and takes about two hours.
• By Train: Dehradun Railway Station is 34 km away. You can hop on a shared taxi right outside the station for ₹200 to ₹300 per seat, or hire a private cab for ₹1,500.
• By Road: Driving from Delhi takes around 6 to 7 hours via the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway and NH 7. The road is well-paved, but the final climb involves steep hairpin bends.

Getting Around

Private vehicles are restricted on Mall Road during peak hours (usually 4 PM to 9 PM). Walking is the best way to explore the ridge between Library Chowk and Picture Palace.

For longer distances to places like Kempty Falls or Landour, hire local auto-rickshaws or shared cabs. Negotiate fares beforehand if the vehicle doesn't run on a meter.

Top Things to Do

Day 1: Heritage, Views, and the Classic Mall Road Walk

• 08:00 AM – Sunrise at Lal Tibba: Head straight to Landour before the clouds roll in. Lal Tibba is the highest point in Mussoorie. Climb to the old telescope platform (₹50 entry) for a razor-sharp view of the snow-capped Bandarpoonch and Kedarnath peaks.
• 10:00 AM – Breakfast at Landour Bakehouse: Walk down to this charming bakery. Order their signature cinnamon roll and a hot chocolate. It’s styled like a 19th-century English tea room.
• 12:00 PM – Gun Hill Point: Take the ropeway from Mall Road (₹150 return ticket). The 400-meter cable car ride gives you a bird’s-eye view of the Doon Valley.
• 02:00 PM – Lunch at Chic Chocolate: Grab a seat at this legendary spot on Mall Road. Their homemade chocolates and wood-fired pizzas hit the spot after a morning of walking.
• 04:00 PM – Mall Road Stroll: Walk from Library Chowk to Picture Palace. Stop by the historic Cambridge Book Depot where Ruskin Bond often holds book-signing sessions on Saturdays.

Day 2: Waterfalls, Nature Trails, and Sunset Spots

• 08:00 AM – Kempty Falls (Early Visit): Beat the tourist buses by arriving right when it opens at 8:00 AM. It's commercialized, but the sight of water cascading down 40 feet is worth a quick look.
• 11:00 AM – Company Garden: A pleasant botanical garden with a man-made lake and amusement rides. Good if you're traveling with family, though you can skip it if you prefer quiet nature.
• 01:30 PM – Lunch at The Tavern: Located near Picture Palace, this restaurant serves great continental food and local Garhwali thalis.
• 03:30 PM – Camel’s Back Road Walk: Take a peaceful 3 km walk along this horse-shoe shaped road named after a rock formation resembling a sitting camel. Zero vehicular traffic makes it ideal for quiet conversation.
• 05:30 PM – Sunset at George Everest House: Drive past Cloud's End to Sir George Everest's house and laboratory. The surrounding green ridge offers a 360-degree sunset view.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

• Jabarkhet Nature Reserve: A privately owned wildlife sanctuary off the Mussoorie-Dhanaulti road. Pay the entry fee (₹350) for well-marked hiking trails, rare flora, and absolute silence.
• Cloud's End: The western extremity of Mussoorie, surrounded by dense oak and deodar forests. It marks the end of the town and the beginning of pristine trekking routes toward Benog Wildlife Sanctuary.

Accommodation Guide

Where you stay dictates your entire Mussoorie experience. Skip crowded hotels right on Mall Road if you value sleep.

Where to Eat (Local Food Guide)

Don't leave Mussoorie without trying these local culinary staples:

• Garhwali Kafuli: A nutrient-rich spinach and fenugreek curry cooked in iron pots, best paired with steamed rice.
• Phaanu: A mixed lentil soup with a smoky, roasted flavor profile.
• Bun Maska and Chai at Char Dukan (Landour): Four small shops sitting opposite St. Paul’s Church. Try the ginger tea and bunny chow.

Budget Breakdown (2 Days / 1 Night)

Here is what a standard mid-range trip costs for two people sharing expenses:

Packing Checklist

• Comfortable walking shoes with good grip (Mall Road and Landour involve steep inclines)
• Layered clothing (even summer evenings get chilly in the hills)
• Reusable water bottle
• Basic first aid and motion sickness tablets for the winding mountain roads
• Power bank (cold weather drains phone batteries fast)

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Packing too much into a single day. The altitude and steep climbs will exhaust you faster than you think. Keep your schedule flexible.

• Watch out for aggressive local monkeys near viewpoints like Gun Hill and Company Garden.
• Always check your taxi brakes and tire conditions if you are self-driving up the hills.

Nearby Attractions

• Dhanaulti: Located 30 km further up the road, offering thick alpine forests and a much quieter vibe.
• Dehradun: Perfect for a quick stop at Robber's Cave or Tapkeshwar Temple on your way back.
