Nainital vs Bhimtal: Which Kumaon Destination Should You Visit?

Introduction

I’ve lost count of how many times friends have asked me: "Should I stay in Nainital or head straight to Bhimtal?" It’s the ultimate Kumaon valley dilemma. Nainital is the granddame of Indian hill stations—complete with a gorgeous pear-shaped lake, colonial-era architecture, and a buzzing market scene that practically hums with energy. Bhimtal, just 22 kilometers down the road, is its quieter, more reflective younger sibling, centered around a vast lake with an island cafe.

After visiting both towns across different seasons—freezing Januarys, packed June weekends, and moody monsoon afternoons—I can tell you they offer completely different trips. If you want midnight momo runs, boat rides under streetlights, and old-school hill station vibes, Nainital wins. If you want paddleboarding, peace, and uninterrupted lake views from your balcony without dodging selfie sticks, Bhimtal is your spot. Let’s break down everything from hotel prices to local food so you can make the right call.

Quick Facts About Nainital vs Bhimtal

Best Time to Visit

Both towns are accessible year-round, but your experience depends entirely on the month you choose. March to June brings pleasant summer weather with temperatures hovering around 20°C to 27°C, making it the peak season for escaping the plains. Monsoon (July to September) brings dramatic mist, fewer tourists, and lush green hills, though road slippages can happen near Kathgodam.

Winters (October to February) get genuinely cold. Nainital often dips near freezing, and you might catch snowfall on higher ridges like Snow View Point. Bhimtal stays slightly warmer due to its lower elevation, making winter days crisp and sunny.

Pro Tip: Skip the May-June rush entirely. October and November offer crystal-clear Himalayan views and empty roads.

Weather Guide

How to Reach

Both destinations share the same transit gateway: Kathgodam, located about 34 km from Bhimtal and 41 km from Nainital. Kathgodam is the final railway station on the line, well-connected by overnight trains like the Ranikhet Express from Delhi.

From Kathgodam station, you can grab a shared taxi (₹150 to ₹200 per seat) or hire a private cab (₹1,200 to ₹1,800 depending on your destination). If you're driving from Delhi, take the NH9 via Rampur and Rudrapur. The 300 km drive takes about 6 to 7 hours if you beat the morning city traffic out of Ghaziabad.

Getting Around

Getting around Nainital is simple on foot if you stay near Mall Road, but internal vehicles face strict parking rules. Walking is often faster than sitting in traffic jams near the Flats. Local rickshaws and taxis operate fixed routes.

In Bhimtal, walking around the lake is a joy, but you will need a scooter or a rented car to explore nearby spots like Naukuchiatal or Sattal. Public transport is sparse once you leave the main lake promenade.

Top Things to Do

In Nainital

• Boating on Naini Lake: Rent a paddleboat or traditional rowboat (approx. ₹210 to ₹420 per hour). Go just before sunset for the best light.
• Snow View Point: Take the ropeway (₹300 return) up for panoramic Himalayan vistas.
• Mall Road Stroll: Walk from Tallital to Mallital, stopping for hot tea and roasted corn on the cob.

In Bhimtal

• Bhimtal Lake Island Visit: Take a boat to the central island, which houses a small aquarium and rest area.
• Kayaking & Paddleboarding: Head to Aquays Sports near the lake edge for water sports.
• Victoria Dam Walk: A peaceful stone walkway at the edge of the lake framed by pine trees.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

If you want to escape the main crowds, skip the main lakes entirely for a few hours. In Nainital, hike up to Tiffin Top (Dorothy's Seat) early in the morning before the horse-riding touts arrive. The forested trail offers quiet patches of oak and rhododendron trees.

Near Bhimtal, drive 4 km further to Sattal (Seven Lakes). It's a cluster of interconnected freshwater lakes surrounded by dense forest, famous for birdwatching. You’ll spot kingfishers, woodpeckers, and eagles without anyone interrupting your peace.

Accommodation Guide

Nainital leans toward heritage properties and bustling hotels right on Mall Road. Bhimtal focuses on lakeside resorts, boutique villas, and modern homestays with bigger balconies.

Where to Eat (Local Food Guide)

Kumaoni cuisine is rustic, wholesome, and heavy on lentils and local herbs. Don't leave without trying Bhatt ki Dal (black soybean curry) and Aaloo Gutuk.

• In Nainital: Head to Sakley's Restaurant & Pastry Shop on Mall Road for old-school continental food and banoffee pie. For local street snacks, grab hot momos at Sonam Fast Food in Tibet Market.
• In Bhimtal: Try The Boat House Club for a heritage dining experience right on the water, or stop at Vatsyayana Resort's cafe for wood-fired pizza with valley views.
