Introduction
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve packed a weekend bag and taken the overnight bus up to Rishikesh. Most people think it’s just an ashram town or a stopover for the Char Dham Yatra, but after spending weeks exploring every alleyway, I can tell you it’s a full-throttle adventure hub mixed with deep spirituality and some of the best coffee in northern India.
If you only have 72 hours, you need a plan that cuts through the chaos. This itinerary balances high-octane river rafting with slow cafe mornings, ancient temples, and the hypnotic evening Ganga Aarti at Parmarth Niketan.
Quick Facts About Rishikesh
- State: Uttarakhand, India
- Elevation: 372 meters above sea level
- Famous For: Yoga, white-water rafting, Beatles Ashram, and Ganga Aarti
- Vibe: Vegetarian, alcohol-free in municipal limits, spiritual yet adventurous
- Language: Hindi, Garhwali, English widely spoken in tourist areas
Best Time to Visit
Timing makes or breaks your Rishikesh trip. If you’re coming strictly for river rafting, you’ll want to check seasonal openings, as the government bans rafting during the peak monsoon months due to dangerous water levels.
Pro Tip: September to November gives you lush green mountain views after the rains, while February to April offers warm days and cool, crisp nights ideal for outdoor camping.
Weather Guide
How to Reach Rishikesh
Getting here from Delhi is straightforward, whether you're driving, taking a train, or flying.
- By Air: Fly into Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport (DED), located about 21 km from Rishikesh. A prepaid taxi from the airport costs around ₹1,000 to ₹1,200.
- By Train: Take the overnight Mussoorie Express from Old Delhi to Haridwar (approx. ₹400-₹1,500), then grab a local bus or taxi for the remaining 25 km to Rishikesh.
- By Road: Volvo buses run nightly from Delhi’s ISBT Kashmere Gate to Rishikesh ISBT. Tickets cost ₹600-₹1,200, and the journey takes roughly 6 to 7 hours depending on traffic.
Getting Around
Once you arrive, forget about renting cars. The narrow lanes around Ram Jhula and Lakshman Jhula are completely pedestrianized.
- Walking: The absolute best way to cross the suspension bridges and explore market lanes.
- Auto-Rickshaws: Good for getting from Rishikesh Railway Station to Tapovan or Ram Jhula (costs ₹150 to ₹250).
- Scooter Rentals: Available near Tapovan for roughly ₹400 to ₹500 a day. Just make sure your license is handy.
Top Things to Do: The 3-Day Plan
Day 1: Cafes, Suspension Bridges & The Ganga Aarti
- 09:00 AM: Check into your hotel in Tapovan and grab breakfast at Little Buddha Cafe. Order their avocado toast and an iced americano while looking directly over the Ganges.
- 11:30 AM: Walk across Lakshman Jhula (note: check current pedestrian status updates as bridge maintenance happens periodically) and explore the bustling market stalls selling rudraksha beads and silver jewelry.
- 02:00 PM: Visit the legendary Beatles Ashram (Chaurasi Kutia). Entry is ₹150 for Indians and ₹600 for foreigners. Spend a couple of hours walking through the graffiti-covered dome huts where the Fab Four stayed in 1968.
- 05:00 PM: Head down to Parmarth Niketan in Swarg Ashram for the world-famous Ganga Aarti. Grab a seat on the steps by 5:30 PM to get a clear view of the priests performing rituals with giant brass lamps.
Day 2: White-Water Rafting & Cliff Jumping
- 08:00 AM: Fuel up with a heavy breakfast. Today is all about the river. Book a 16 km rafting stretch from Shivpuri to Nim Beach.
- 10:00 AM: Hit the water. You’ll tackle legendary rapids like 'Roller Coaster', 'Golf Course', and 'Tea Estate'. Your guide will likely give you the green light to jump off a 20-foot cliff into the freezing Himalayan water.
- 02:00 PM: After drying off, grab a late lunch at Freedom Ganga Cafe near German Bakery.
- 05:00 PM: Watch the sunset from Triveni Ghat while local musicians play acoustic guitar by the riverbank.

- 02:00 PM: Explore the underground shrines at Trayambakeshwar Temple (the 13-story temple near Lakshman Jhula).
- 05:00 PM: End your trip with organic pizza at Pumpernickel German Bakery overlooking the valley.
Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path
Skip the crowded tourist spots for an afternoon and head to Neer Garh Waterfall. While the lower tiers get busy, if you hike 1.5 km past the ticket counter to the upper pools, you’ll find quiet cascades surrounded by jungle. Another secret spot is Patna Waterfall, a short 3 km trek from Lakshman Jhula that features a natural limestone cave.
Accommodation Guide
Where you stay shapes your trip. Tapovan is vibrant and full of digital nomads; Ram Jhula is spiritual and traditional; Mohan Chatti is ideal for pure nature lovers.
Where to Eat (Local Food Guide)
Rishikesh is strictly vegetarian by municipal law, but the culinary scene is world-class.
- Little Buddha Cafe: Famous for treehouse seating, smoothie bowls, and wood-fired pizzas.
- Free Spirit Cafe: Great balcony views, excellent shakshuka, and live acoustic music on weekends.
- Chotiwala Restaurant: A Rishikesh institution near Ram Jhula. Look for the real-life bald man sitting outside with painted eyebrows. Order the North Indian thali (₹300).
