Introduction
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve packed my bags for Rishikesh. Whether it’s the icy splash of the Ganges hitting you during a grade III rapid or the heart-stopping drop off India’s highest bungee platform at Jumpin Heights, this town hits differently. Most first-timers get overwhelmed by the sheer volume of river camps, overpriced operators, and confusing transport options.
That’s exactly why I put together this guide. I’m stripping away the fluff and giving you the exact costs, real logistics, and insider safety tips you need. If you want to conquer the rapids, sleep under the stars, and keep your wallet intact, keep reading.

Best Time to Visit
Timing makes or breaks your Rishikesh trip. If you're going strictly for rafting, you need to know when the government opens and closes the river seasons. Monsoons bring dangerous currents, so rafting is strictly banned from July to mid-September.
Weather Guide
Planning your pack list depends entirely on when you land in the Garhwal Himalayas. Here is what to expect month by month.
How to Reach Rishikesh
Getting to the yoga and adventure capital is straightforward, thanks to improved rail and highway infrastructure.
- By Air: The nearest airport is Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport (DED), located about 20 km away. A prepaid taxi from the airport to Rishikesh costs roughly ₹1,000 to ₹1,500.
- By Train: Yog Nagari Rishikesh (YNRK) is the main railway station right in town. Alternatively, Haridwar Junction is 25 km away and has far better connectivity from Delhi, Mumbai, and Varanasi.
- By Road: Overnight Volvo buses run daily from Delhi's Kashmiri Gate ISBT to Rishikesh. The journey takes around 6 to 7 hours and costs between ₹600 and ₹1,200 depending on the bus type.
Getting Around
Navigating Rishikesh requires patience, especially around the narrow lanes of Ram Jhula and Laxman Jhula where four-wheelers are heavily restricted.
- Two-Wheeler Rentals: This is the best way to move around. You can rent a Activa or scooter near Tapovan for ₹400 to ₹600 per day. Fuel is extra.
- Auto-Rickshaws: Shared autos run fixed routes and cost around ₹20 to ₹30 per person. Private autos will quote ₹200 to ₹400 for a trip from Tapovan to the railway station—always bargain.
- Walking: If you stay in Tapovan or near the bridges, walking is your best friend. Just watch out for stray cows and speeding bikes.
Top Things to Do
An adventure trip to Rishikesh isn't complete without checking off these bucket-list experiences.
1. White-Water Rafting
River rafting is the crown jewel of Rishikesh. You have four main stretches ranging from easy floats to terrifying drops.- Brahmapuri to Rishikesh (9 km): Great for beginners and families. Cost: ₹600 per person.
- Shivpuri to Rishikesh (16 km): The sweet spot. Includes rapids like 'Roller Coaster' and 'Golf Course'. Cost: ₹1,000 to ₹1,200 per person.
- Marine Drive to Rishikesh (24 km): More intense rapids, good for thrill-seekers. Cost: ₹1,500 per person.
- Kaudiyala to Rishikesh (36 km): The ultimate test featuring 'The Wall' (Grade IV+). Only for experienced swimmers and adrenaline junkies. Cost: ₹2,500+ per person.
2. Bungee Jumping & Extreme Sports
Head to Mohan Chatti (about 15 km from Rishikesh) to experience Jumpin Heights, operated by former army officers. Safety standards here match Australian and New Zealand norms.- Bungee Jumping (83 meters): India's highest fixed platform. Cost: ₹3,750.
- Giant Swing: Done from the same platform, swinging like a giant pendulum. Cost: ₹3,750.
- Flying Fox: Asia's longest flying fox flying across a valley at 160 km/h. Cost: ₹3,000.
3. Riverside Camping
Skip the concrete hotels for at least one night. Camps in Shivpuri and Marine Drive offer Swiss tents, bonfires, volleyball, and stargazing.- Budget Camps: Basic shared tents with common washrooms. Cost: ₹1,200 to ₹1,800 per night (including meals).
- Luxury Camps: Attached bathrooms, geysers, and proper bedding. Cost: ₹2,500 to ₹5,000 per night.
Pro Tip: When booking a river camp, confirm whether it's right on the riverbank or up on the highway. Riverside camps offer direct access to the water, whereas highway camps require a 15-minute walk down a steep cliff.
Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path
Want to escape the backpacker crowds in Tapovan? Check out these lesser-known spots.
- Garurchhatti Waterfall: Smaller than Patna Waterfall, this hidden cascade is a short hike off the Neelkanth Temple road. Go early morning to have the rock pools to yourself.
- Kunjapuri Temple Sunrise Trek: Drive or trek up to Kunjapuri Temple at 5:00 AM. The panoramic view of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks catching the first golden light is unforgettable.
- Vashistha Guha: A ancient, quiet cave on the banks of the Ganges about 20 km upstream. Perfect for silent meditation away from the town chaos.
Accommodation Guide
Where you stay shapes your entire trip. Here is where you should drop your bags depending on your style.
- Tapovan (The Backpacking Hub): Best for solo travelers, digital nomads, and foodies. Full of hostels, cafes, and yoga schools.

Where to Eat (Local Food Guide)
Forget alcohol and non-veg within municipal limits—Rishikesh is a strictly vegetarian and dry city. But trust me, you won't miss meat with the culinary scene here.
- Freedom Cafe (Tapovan): Perched right over the Ganges, famous for wood-fired pizzas and banana pancakes.
- Little Buddha Cafe: Treehouse-style seating, excellent Israeli breakfast, and herbal teas with sunset views.
- Chotiwala Restaurant (Near Swarg Ashram): A legendary institution serving traditional North Indian thalis since decades. Look for the real-life bald man sitting outside.
- Pyramid Cafe: Hidden away in Tapovan, great place to work on a laptop or chill with a book over cold-brewed coffee.

- Basic first aid, motion sickness pills, and sunscreen
Safety Tips & Common Mistakes
Common Mistake: Swimming in the Ganges near the ghats without knowing the undercurrents. The river is deceptively fast and dangerous in many spots. Always wear your life jacket.
- Never raft without a licensed guide: Ensure your rafting operator provides ISI-certified helmets, properly fitted life jackets, and conducts a safety briefing.
- Book adventure sports in advance: Jumpin Heights requires mandatory prior booking. Walk-ins are almost never entertained.
- Respect local customs: Keep shoulders and knees covered when visiting temples and ashrams.
Nearby Attractions
If you have an extra day, extend your itinerary to these nearby destinations:
- Haridwar (25 km): Experience the spiritual sensory overload of the Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri.
- Rajaji National Park (18 km): Go on an elephant safari or jungle jeep safari through dense sal forests.
- Dehradun & Mussoorie (45-85 km): Head up into the queen of hills for cooler weather and colonial architecture.
