Which Rishikesh Rafting Route Is Best for Beginners?

Introduction

Standing on the sandy banks of the Ganges in Brahmpuri, watching the green-tinted water rush past, it's easy to feel a mix of nervous excitement. If you've never held a paddle and are wondering if you can handle the legendary rapids of Rishikesh, you're not alone. I’ve led countless friends through their maiden river trips here, and the first question is always the same: Which route should we actually book?

TripAdvisor and booking sites list half a dozen stretches with confusing names like Marine Drive, Shivpuri, and Kaudiyala. For a beginner, picking the wrong route can mean either an underwhelming float or a terrifying encounter with Class IV rapids. Let's cut through the noise and figure out the exact route you need.

Quick Facts About Rishikesh Rafting

Before you look at booking options, you need to understand how the Uttarakhand forest department and river guides categorize the rafting stretches. It's all about distance and rapid difficulty.

Pro Tip: Don't let aggressive local touts talk you into the 36 km Kaudiyala run if it's your first time. The 'The Wall' rapid here flips rafts regularly and requires swimming certification.

Best Time to Visit

Rishikesh rafting season officially opens in September and runs until June. July and August are completely closed due to monsoon flooding when the Ganges turns into a raging brown torrent.

If you want the best weather and manageable water levels, target the shoulder months of October-November or February-March. December and January are bone-chillingly cold on the water, even if the sun is shining.

How to Reach Rishikesh

Getting to your rafting base is straightforward. If you're flying, Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport (DED) is just 21 kilometers away; a prepaid taxi to Laxman Jhula costs around ₹1,000 to ₹1,500.

If you're taking the train, Haridwar Junction is the major railhead 25 kilometers south. From Haridwar, you can grab a shared auto-rickshaw for ₹100 or a private cab for ₹800 to reach Rishikesh.

Getting Around

Once you're in Rishikesh, avoid renting cars because parking near Tapovan and Laxman Jhula is a nightmare. Rent a scooter from agencies near Ram Jhula for about ₹400 to ₹500 per day.

For reaching rafting launch points like Brahmpuri or Shivpuri, your rafting operator will almost always include jeep transfers in the booking price. Don't pay extra for transit.

Top Things to Do

When you aren't battling the rapids on the Brahmpuri route, Rishikesh offers plenty to fill your itinerary. Attend the evening Ganga Aarti at Parmarth Niketan for a mesmerizing spiritual experience.

Spend an afternoon exploring the Beatles Ashram (Chaurasi Kutia) for ₹150 (Indian) or ₹600 (foreigners). It's a peaceful, graffiti-covered sanctuary tucked inside Rajaji National Park.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Skip the crowded Triveni Ghat and hike up to Patna Waterfall instead. It's a short 1.5-kilometer trek from the main road near Neer Garh, offering a quiet limestone cave waterfall and a tiny tea stall.

Another great spot is Garud Chatti waterfall, where you can sip cutting chai while dipping your feet in ice-cold mountain runoff without hordes of tourists.

Accommodation Guide

Where you stay dictates your morning vibe. If you want party hostels, stay in Tapovan. If you want yoga ashrams, stay near Ram Jhula.

Where to Eat

Food in Rishikesh is strictly vegetarian and mostly alcohol-free near the riverfront.

Head to Little Buddha Café near Laxman Jhula for incredible wood-fired pizzas and views overlooking the Ganges. For authentic local Garhwali thalis, check out Chotiwala near Ram Jhula, an iconic landmark since the 1950s.

Budget Breakdown

Packing Checklist

Don't show up to the river unprepared. Here is your exact gear checklist:

• Quick-dry synthetic shorts or t-shirts (avoid cotton!)
• Secure sports sandals or water shoes (no flip-flops—they wash away instantly)
• Waterproof pouch for your phone (though guides hold dry bags, it's good to have extras)
• Biodegradable sunscreen and UV-blocking sunglasses with a strap
• Change of dry clothes and a towel waiting in the operator's jeep

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Many beginners book the Shivpuri-to-Rishikesh route thinking 'it's just a few kilometers longer,' only to panic during the Grade III Daniel's Dip rapid. Stick to Brahmpuri for your first time.

Always listen carefully during the pre-trip safety briefing. If you fall out of the raft, float on your back with your feet pointing downstream on the surface so you don't hit submerged boulders.

Nearby Attractions

If you have an extra day, take a day trip to Devprayag to witness the holy confluence of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers forming the Ganga proper. It's about 70 kilometers north up the NH7.

Wildlife lovers can book a safari in Rajaji National Park's Chilla range, located just 30 minutes south of Rishikesh.
