Where Can You See Snow in Uttarakhand? 10 Best Snow Destinations

Introduction

Catching snowfall in Uttarakhand is all about timing and picking the right elevation. Many travelers head to Mussoorie expecting knee-deep snow in mid-December, only to find clear skies and cold winds. If you want proper snow blanketed pine trees, frozen lakes, and skiable slopes, you need to head deeper into Garhwal or Kumaon.

Over the last decade of exploring these mountain corridors, I've seen unpredictable weather turn quiet hill towns into white wonderlands overnight. Whether you want an easy weekend trip from Delhi or an intense snow trek above 10,000 feet, Uttarakhand delivers.

In this guide, I break down the 10 absolute best spots to see snow in Uttarakhand. You'll get real logistics, exact budget numbers in INR, local hotel names, and practical advice on how to avoid getting stranded on icy roads.

Quick Facts About Snow in Uttarakhand

Before packing your bags, keep these key geographical realities in mind:

• Primary Snow Region: High-altitude belts of Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Pithoragarh, and upper Dehradun districts.
• Snow Threshold Elevation: Places above 2,200 meters (7,200 ft) get regular snowfall between late December and February.
• Peak Snow Months: January 15 to February 20.
• Closest Railheads: Haridwar/Rishikesh for Garhwal region; Kathgodam for Kumaon region.
• Closest Airport: Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun) for Garhwal; Pantnagar Airport for Kumaon.

10 Best Snow Destinations in Uttarakhand

1. Auli (Chamoli District)

Elevation: 2,800 meters (9,180 ft)

Auli is India's premier ski destination for good reason. Surrounded by oak forests and framed by Nanda Devi (7,816m), it gets consistent snowfall from late December through March. You can take the 4.4 km ropeway ride up from Joshimath directly to the slopes.

• Best for: Skiing, cable car views, family snow trips.
• Snow Window: Mid-December to early April.
• Where to Stay: GMVN Ski Resort or Cliff Top Club.

Pro Tip: If the road from Joshimath to Auli freezes, private cars won't be allowed without chains. Hop on the Joshimath-Auli Cable Car (₹1,000 round trip) to bypass road closures entirely.

2. Chopta (Rudraprayag District)

Elevation: 2,680 meters (8,790 ft)

Often called the 'Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand', Chopta becomes a white meadow in winter. It acts as the base camp for the trek to Tungnath (the highest Shiva temple in the world) and Chandrashila Peak. Trekking through knee-deep snow among rhododendron trees here is unforgettable.

• Best for: Snow trekking, camping, panoramic Himalayan views.
• Snow Window: Late December to March.
• Where to Stay: Snow Pod Chopta or basic winter homestays in Sari village.

3. Munsiyari (Pithoragarh District)

Elevation: 2,200 meters (7,200 ft)

Located deep in the Kumaon region, Munsiyari faces the dramatic Panchachuli peaks. When it snows here, the entire valley lights up against the five snow-capped summits. It takes longer to reach, which means far fewer tourists than Mussoorie or Nainital.

• Best for: Offbeat travelers, stunning mountain vistas, peaceful snowscapes.
• Snow Window: January to mid-February.
• Where to Stay: Milam Inn or Bilju Inn.

4. Harsil Valley (Uttarkashi District)

Elevation: 2,620 meters (8,595 ft)

Located on the banks of the Bhagirathi River on the way to Gangotri, Harsil transforms into a quiet snow paradise. Apple orchards sit covered under heavy snow, and wooden Himachali-style houses give it a cozy atmosphere. Electricity and phone connectivity can drop during heavy blizzards, so prepare accordingly.

• Best for: Couples, peace seekers, winter photography.
• Snow Window: Late December to late February.
• Where to Stay: Devdar Riverside Retreat or GMVN Harsil.

5. Kedarkantha / Sankri (Uttarkashi District)

Elevation: 3,800 meters (12,500 ft at summit)

If you want guaranteed snow walking, the Kedarkantha trek starting from Sankri village is hard to beat. The trail winds through dense pine forests opening up to snow-covered clearings like Juda-Ka-Talab (a frozen lake).

• Best for: Adventure enthusiasts, beginner snow trekkers.
• Snow Window: December to April.
• Where to Stay: Swargarohini Homestay in Sankri; alpine tents during the trek.

6. Dhanaulti & Kanatal (Tehri Garhwal)

Elevation: 2,280 meters (7,480 ft)

Just 24 km ahead of Mussoorie, Dhanaulti gets significantly more snow because of its higher elevation and dense deodar forest cover. Kanatal, a few kilometers further, offers quiet eco-parks with great views of the snow ranges.

• Best for: Quick weekend trips from Delhi/NCR.
• Snow Window: January to early February.
• Where to Stay: Camp Awara, The Terrace, or Eco Hill Resort.

7. Dayara Bugyal (Uttarkashi District)

Elevation: 3,048 meters (10,000 ft)

During summer, Dayara is a vast green alpine meadow. In winter, it turns into a massive snow field ideal for winter trekking and beginner ski runs. You reach it via a 9 km trek starting from Raithal village.

• Best for: Meadow snow trekking, solitude.
• Snow Window: January to March.
• Where to Stay: Local homestays in Raithal (like Goat Village) before heading up with a guide.

8. Kharsali & Barkot (Uttarkashi District)

Elevation: 2,400 meters (7,870 ft)

Kharsali is the winter seat of Goddess Yamuna. When Yamunotri shuts down due to heavy snow, the deity is brought down here. It is an untouched location where snow stays fresh on the ground for days without heavy tourist traffic.

• Best for: Cultural winter exploration, raw countryside snow.
• Snow Window: January to mid-February.
• Where to Stay: Basic guest houses in Barkot or local homestays in Kharsali.

9. Landour & Mussoorie (Dehradun District)

Elevation: 2,250 meters (7,380 ft in Landour)

While Mall Road in Mussoorie gets rare, fleeting snow spells, higher up in Landour (Lal Tibba and Char Dukan), snow settles regularly during peak Western Disturbances in January. It is the easiest destination to reach if you do not want long mountain drives.

• Best for: Heritage walks, cozy cafes, accessible road trips.
• Snow Window: Mid-January to early February (unpredictable).
• Where to Stay: Rokeby Manor or Castle Contrived in Landour.

10. Chakrata (Dehradun District)

Elevation: 2,118 meters (6,948 ft)

Chakrata is a secluded cantonment town surrounded by ancient coniferous forests. Places like Chilmiri Neck and Tiger Falls offer incredible winter vistas when snow falls across the ridges. Because it is a military zone, commercialization is low.

• Best for: Offbeat winter driving, quiet retreats.
• Snow Window: January to early February.
• Where to Stay: Snow View Heritage Resort or High Falls Camp.

Best Time to Visit for Snow

To witness active snowfall, you need a active Western Disturbance passing over North India.

• First Snow (Early Season): Mid to late December. Good for places like Kedarkantha summit and upper Auli.
• Peak Snow Season: January 10 to February 20. High probability of live snowfall in Auli, Chopta, Harsil, and Dhanaulti.
• Late Season Snow: Late February to March. Great for ski conditions in Auli and melting snow landscapes in high bugyals.

Weather Guide (Month-by-Month)

How to Reach Snow Destinations in Uttarakhand

By Air

• Garhwal Region: Fly into Jolly Grant Airport (DED) in Dehradun. From here, hire a private cab or take a bus towards Rishikesh to access routes to Auli, Chopta, Harsil, or Dhanaulti.
• Kumaon Region: Fly into Pantnagar Airport (PGH). Rent a vehicle heading towards Kathgodam and Almora to access Munsiyari.

By Train

• Haridwar (HW) / Rishikesh (YNRK): Ideal train bases for Garhwal bound travel.
• Kathgodam (KGM): Main railway terminal for Kumaon travel (Munsiyari, Pangot, Nainital high ridges).

By Road

• Regular HRTC and Uttarakhand Roadways buses run from ISBT Kashmiri Gate, New Delhi to Rishikesh, Dehradun, and Haldwani. For high-altitude snow points, switch to shared Sumo/Bolero taxis or private cabs from base hubs.

Getting Around

Mountain driving in winter requires extra skill. Ice patches (black ice) form early in the morning and late in the evening in shadowed mountain corners.

• Local Shared Taxis: TATA Sumos and Mahindra Boleros are the lifelines of Uttarakhand winters. Local drivers know every turn and icy patch.
• Self-Driving Caution: Avoid driving small hatchbacks on snowy mountain roads. Rent 4WD vehicles or ensure you carry anti-skid tire chains if heading towards Auli, Chopta, or Harsil after a heavy spell.

Pro Tip: Never slam brakes on black ice. Use low gears (1st or 2nd) and rely on engine braking to slow down safely.

Top Things to Do in the Snow

• Skiing at Auli Slopes: Hire an instructor at GMVN Auli. Basic gear rental costs around ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 per day.
• Trek to Tungnath Temple: Experience winter trekking from Chopta to the world's highest Shiva temple covered in snow (approx. 3.5 km slope).
• Cable Car Ride in Auli: Ride Asia’s second longest ropeway from Joshimath (1,890m) to Auli (3,050m).
• Cafe Hopping in Snow-Covered Landour: Grab hot apple cider and fresh bakes at Char Dukan while watching snow fall outside.
• Frozen Lake Walking: Hike up to Juda-Ka-Talab on the Kedarkantha route and witness a fully frozen high-altitude lake.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

• Raithal Village: Base for Dayara Bugyal. A quiet village with 500-year-old earthquake-resistant timber homes (Koti Banal architecture) framed by snow-covered peaks.
• Pangot (Near Nainital): While Nainital stays crowded, Pangot sits at 2,200m inside a oak-deodar forest belt that gets quiet snow cover and incredible birdwatching.
• Jalori Pass Border Belts / Kanaser: Kanaser near Chakrata has gigantic ancient trees that look stunning under heavy winter snow.

Accommodation Guide

Where to Eat (Local Food Guide)

Cold weather in Uttarakhand demands hearty, hot local Garhwali and Kumaoni dishes. Skip fast food and try traditional mountain fare at local dhabas.

• Mandua ki Roti with Ghee: Ragi flatbread eaten with fresh homemade butter or melted ghee.
• Aloo ke Gutke with Bhang ki Chutney: Spicy pan-fried potatoes seasoned with local spices and sour hemp seed chutney.
• Chainsoo: A rich, protein-packed curry made from roasted black gram (kali urad dal).
• Phaanu: Made from soaked lentils cooked slowly in an iron pot.

Top Food Spots:

• Char Dukan (Landour): Hot ginger lemon honey tea and cheese omelets.
• Chotiwala / Local Dhabas in Joshimath: Fresh Pahadi Thali.
• Pandit Ji Dhaba near Dhanaulti: Hot Aloo Parathas with fresh white butter.

Budget Trip (Shared transport, homestays, local dhabas)

Mid-Range Trip (Private cab, 3-star hotels/resorts, ski rentals)

Packing Checklist

Layering is essential. Temperatures at night drop well below zero in places like Auli and Chopta.

• Base Layer: Thermal top and bottom (Merino wool or synthetic, avoid cotton).
• Mid Layer: Fleece jacket or sweater.
• Outer Layer: Windproof & waterproof down jacket (-10°C rated).
• Pants: Waterproof trekking pants or thermal-lined snow pants.
• Footwear: High-ankle waterproof boots with decent rubber lug traction.
• Accessories: Woolen beanie, neck gaiter, waterproof snow gloves, polar UV sunglasses (snow glare can burn eyes).
• Essentials: Hot water bottle, 20,000 mAh power bank (batteries drain fast in freezing temperatures), cold cream, lip balm.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Driving up to high passes during or immediately after a heavy snowstorm. Roads like the Joshimath-Auli stretch or Radhtop near Dhanaulti often close for hours due to fallen trees or thick snow blocks. Always check weather updates via local networks before heading up.

• Watch for Black Ice: Early morning (6:00 AM - 9:00 AM) roads look dark and wet, but are covered in slick ice. Drive after 9:30 AM when the sun warms the road.
• Keep Fuel Tanks Full: Gas stations are sparse high up in Joshimath, Uttarkashi, and Munsiyari. Fill up at Rishikesh, Tehri, or Uttarkashi.
• Carry Cash: Power cuts during heavy snow mean ATMs and UPI card machines stop working. Always keep ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 in cash.
• Acclimatize: Do not rush from Dehradun (600m) to Auli/Chopta (2,800m) in a single sprint if you are sensitive to mountain sickness.

Nearby Attractions

Combine your snow trip with these scenic stops on the way up:

• Devprayag: Witness the confluence of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers forming the Ganga.
• Rishikesh: Stop for Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat and white water rafting before hitting cold elevations.
• Tehri Dam: Explore the massive Tehri Lake for water sports on your way to Kanatal or Dhanaulti.
