Introduction
Planning a trip across Kashmir often feels confusing because of outdated taxi rates, conflicting distance figures, and strict local taxi union rules. Having driven through the valley dozens of times over fifteen years, I have seen travelers pay double the actual price or get stranded at town borders because they did not understand how local transport works.
This guide breaks down the classic Kashmir circuit: Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam. You will find exact distances, genuine taxi union fares, route condition notes, and a realistic daily itinerary that avoids tourist traps.
Whether you are hunting for snow in Gulmarg, sipping Kahwa on Dal Lake, or walking pine forests in Pahalgam, this manual gives you the real ground operational picture.
Quick Facts About Srinagar, Gulmarg & Pahalgam
Pro Tip: Never book your flight out of Srinagar earlier than 2:00 PM if you are travelling straight from Pahalgam on your final morning. Traffic checks along NH44 and security screening at Sheikh ul-Alam Airport (SXR) take up to two hours.
Best Time to Visit
Kashmir changes entirely depending on when you arrive. Here is how to pick your travel window based on what you want to experience:
- April to June (Spring/Summer): Temperatures range between 12°C and 25°C. Lush green valleys, blooming tulip gardens (April), and clear roads. Best for families and trekkers.
- July to September (Monsoon/Late Summer): Low rainfall compared to mainland India. Warm days, fruit orchards loaded with apples and walnuts, and lower hotel tariffs.
- October to November (Autumn): The Chinar trees turn fiery orange and gold. Crisp, dry weather with daytime temperatures around 15°C.
- December to March (Winter): Snow covers Gulmarg and Pahalgam. Temperatures dip to -8°C. Perfect for skiing, snowmobiling, and seeing frozen landscapes.

The nearest major railhead outside Kashmir is Jammu Tawi (260 km from Srinagar). However, with the Vande Bharat expansion on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), you can travel by train to Banihal or Sangaldan and take a connecting cab across the Jawahar Tunnel route.By Road
National Highway 44 (NH44) connects Jammu to Srinagar through the Chenani-Nashri Tunnel. Drive time from Jammu to Srinagar is around 7 to 9 hours depending on hill traffic and truck movements.Getting Around
Navigating transport in Kashmir requires understanding the Local Taxi Union regulations. Commercial cabs registered in Srinagar cannot take tourists for internal sightseeing in Pahalgam or Gulmarg snow zones. They can only drop you off at the main taxi stand or hotel.
Kashmir Taxi Union Rules Explained
- Srinagar Vehicles: A Srinagar taxi (Sedan or Innova) can complete your transfers (Srinagar to Gulmarg, Srinagar to Pahalgam, Srinagar to Airport).
- Gulmarg Rules: In deep winter (December to February), Srinagar cabs stop at Tangmarg (12 km below Gulmarg) due to snow. You must hire local Tangmarg cabs equipped with tire chains to reach Gulmarg meadow.
- Pahalgam Rules: Srinagar cabs drop you at the Pahalgam taxi stand. To visit Aru Valley, Betaab Valley, or Chandanwari (the ABC valleys), you must rent an official cab from the Pahalgam Taxi Stand Union.
Pro Tip: When bargaining for local Pahalgam cabs, pick the package rate for all three spots (Aru Valley, Betaab Valley, Chandanwari) at the central Union counter near the main market. Fares are printed on an official board.

Budget Breakdown
Here is what you can expect to spend for a 6-day Kashmir circuit trip for two adults:
Packing Checklist
Summer (April to September)
- Lightweight cotton clothes and full-sleeve t-shirts.
- Light jacket or fleece for cool evenings in Gulmarg and Pahalgam.
- Comfortable walking shoes with decent traction.
- Sunscreen, sunglasses, and lip balm.
- Postpaid SIM Card (Prepaid SIM cards from outside J&K DO NOT work in Kashmir).
Winter (October to March)
- Thermal innerwear (at least 2-3 sets).
- Heavy down jacket or windproof winter parka.
- Waterproof snow boots with good tread.
- Woollen socks, gloves, thermal caps, and neck gaiters.
- Body warmer heat pouches (useful for electronics and quick warmth).
Safety Tips & Common Mistakes
Common Mistake: Buying non-postpaid SIM cards. Foreigners and Indian travelers with outside prepaid mobile lines lose connection the moment they touch down in Srinagar. Get a Airtel or Jio postpaid connection before traveling, or purchase a local tourist SIM at Srinagar airport upon arrival using your passport/Aadhaar.
- Pony Scams in Pahalgam and Gulmarg: Pony handlers often quote exorbitant prices like ₹3,000 per pony for a short walk. Check the government union board displayed at horse stands. Negotiate directly based on fixed rates (usually ₹800 to ₹1,200 per route).
- Gondola Boarding Time Slot: Show up at the Gondola station 30 minutes prior to the time printed on your ticket. Late arrivals get dumped into long general queues.
- ATMs and Cash Availability: While UPI and cards work in Srinagar, mobile networks drop in high valleys like Aru or Phase 2 Apharwat. Always carry at least ₹8,000 to ₹10,000 in cash for emergency local transport and union cabs.
