Tungnath Trek 2026: Route, Distance, Difficulty & Complete Guide

Introduction

Standing at 3,680 meters, Tungnath isn't just another Himalayan trek. It's home to the highest Shiva temple in the world, sitting right beneath the jagged peak of Chandrashila in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district. If you've been scrolling through Instagram and seeing those jaw-dropping panoramic shots of snow-capped Himalayan ranges above a sea of clouds, chances are you're looking right at this trail.

I’ve hiked this route four times over the past decade, watching it transform from a quiet pilgrimage path into a weekend favorite for city slickers. But don't let the short distance fool you. While it's often marketed as an 'easy' trek, the altitude catches people off guard. Let's break down everything you actually need to know for your 2026 trek without the usual fluff.

Quick Facts About Tungnath Trek

Before you lace up your boots, let's look at the raw numbers. Knowing these metrics helps you manage your stamina and plan your itinerary realistically.

Pro Tip: Don't stop at the Tungnath temple. Push another 1.5 km up to the Chandrashila summit for sunrise. It's steeper, but the view of Nanda Devi and Chaukhamba peaks is worth every heavy breath.

Best Time to Visit

Timing your trek makes all the difference. Go in the monsoon, and you'll battle leeches and slippery rock paths. Go in peak winter, and you'll need microspikes and serious cold-weather gear.

Spring (April to June) brings clear blue skies, rhododendrons in full bloom, and manageable temperatures. Autumn (September to November) offers the crispest mountain views after the monsoon dust settles. July and August bring heavy rains and landslide risks along the mountain roads, so I generally advise avoiding those months unless you're an experienced monsoon hiker.

Weather Guide (Month-by-Month Table)

Here is what you can expect month-by-month on the trail:

How to Reach Tungnath

Getting to Chopta, the base camp, requires patience. There is no direct rail or air connectivity.

By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, roughly 210 km away. From the airport, you can hire a private taxi or take a shared cab to Rudraprayag and onward to Chopta.

By Train: Rishikesh railway station is the closest major railhead, situated about 180 km from Chopta. Trains from major Indian cities connect to Haridwar and Dehradun.

By Road: Most travelers drive or take buses from Delhi via Haridwar, Rishikesh, Devprayag, and Rudraprayag. The total driving distance from Delhi is around 410 km and takes roughly 11 to 13 hours.

Getting Around

Once you arrive in Chopta, everything is on foot. There are no autos or local buses running up the mountain trails.

If you have heavy luggage, you can hire local porters at the Chopta base. Rates typically hover around ₹800 to ₹1,000 per day. For travelers with knee issues or extreme fatigue, local vendors sometimes arrange mules up to the temple area, though I strongly recommend walking to minimize trail erosion and enjoy the nature.

Top Things to Do

• Seek Blessings at Tungnath Temple: Take your time exploring the 1,000-year-old stone architecture dedicated to Lord Shiva.
• Summit Chandrashila: Continue past the temple for about an hour to reach the peak at 4,000 meters. The 360-degree Himalayan view is unmatched.
• Bird Watching in Chopta: Chopta is part of Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. Bring binoculars to spot Himalayan monals, thrushes, and laughing thrushes.
• Stargazing: Because Chopta has virtually zero light pollution, nighttime astrophotography here is world-class.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Most tourists head straight up the paved stone path to the temple. Want to escape the crowds? Take the old shepherd trail that runs parallel to the main path through the oak and rhododendron forests.

Another great spot is Deoria Tal, a high-altitude lake located near Mastura village just before Chopta. Most people visit it as a separate day trip, but camping overnight by its pristine shores and watching Chaukhamba reflect in the water at sunrise is an unforgettable experience.

Accommodation Guide

Chopta offers modest stays. Don't expect luxury resorts here; this is raw mountain country.

• Budget: Campsite tents and basic homestays in Chopta (₹800 to ₹1,500 per night).
• Mid-Range: Wooden cottages with attached washrooms run by local families, such as Mayali Swiss Camps (₹2,500 to ₹4,500 per night).
• Luxury: True luxury doesn't exist here, but premium eco-lodges offer comfortable heaters and hot running water (₹6,000+ per night).

Where to Eat (Local Food Guide)

Food options along the trail are basic dhabas serving piping hot Maggi, aloo parathas, and hot chai.

Don't miss trying local Garhwali dishes if you stay at a village homestay. Ask for Chainsoo (a spicy black gram dal preparation), Kandali ki Sabzi (stinging nettle curry that is completely safe and delicious once cooked), and Mandwa ki Roti (finger millet flatbread).

Recommended spots: The small cluster of tea stalls right at the Tungnath temple base serve the best ginger tea you'll ever taste at 3,600 meters.

Budget Breakdown (with INR Tables)

Here is a realistic estimate of what a 3-day trip from Rishikesh to Tungnath will cost you.

Packing Checklist

Packing right can make or break your trek. Here is your essential checklist:

• Sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support and grip
• Thermal innerwear (top and bottom)
• Windproof and waterproof outer jacket
• Fleece jacket or woolens
• Trekking pole (saves your knees on the descent)
• Reusable water bottle (at least 1.5 liters)
• Basic first aid kit and personal medications
• Sunglasses, sunscreen SPF 50+, and lip balm
• Headlamp or flashlight with extra batteries

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Skipping hydration. At high altitude, you lose moisture faster through breathing. Drink at least 3 liters of water daily, even if you don't feel thirsty.

Common Mistake: Rushing the climb. Altitude sickness can strike anyone. Ascend slowly, take regular breaks, and listen to your body. If you experience severe headaches or dizziness, descend immediately.

Pro Tip: Keep your electronics close to your body inside your jacket. Freezing temperatures at higher elevations drain phone and camera batteries instantly.
