Uttarakhand 7-Day Itinerary: Complete Day-by-Day Travel Plan

Introduction

Planning a trip to the 'Land of the Gods' can easily overwhelm anyone. Most itineraries online try to cram too much driving into a single week, leaving you exhausted rather than refreshed. I've spent years exploring the winding mountain roads of Uttarakhand, testing routes, finding the best roadside cafes, and figuring out what actually works.

This 7-day itinerary strikes the right balance. We’ll focus on the scenic Garhwal region—specifically Dehradun, Mussoorie, Dhanaulti, and Rishikesh. You won't spend your entire vacation stuck in a car. Instead, you'll get proper time to hike through pine forests, raft down the Ganga, and watch sunrises over snow-capped Himalayan peaks.

Let’s dive straight into the complete blueprint for your week in the mountains.

Quick Facts About Uttarakhand

• Capital: Dehradun (Winter), Bhararisain (Summer)
• Official Language: Hindi, Garhwali, Kumaoni
• Currency: Indian Rupee (INR / ₹)
• Time Zone: IST (UTC+5:30)
• Famous Regions: Garhwal (west) and Kumaon (east)
• Ideal Trip Duration: 7 to 10 days

Best Time to Visit

Uttarakhand changes drastically depending on when you visit. If you want pleasant weather for walking around, aim for the shoulder months.

Spring (March to April) brings blooming rhododendrons, while autumn (September to November) offers the crispest visibility for mountain views. Monsoon (July to August) brings heavy rainfall and landslide risks, making it a season to avoid unless you are chasing absolute solitude.

Weather Guide

How to Reach Uttarakhand

Getting to Uttarakhand is straightforward thanks to improved highway connectivity from New Delhi.

• By Air: Jolly Grant Airport (DED) in Dehradun is the primary hub. It connects daily with Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. Flights range from ₹3,500 to ₹7,000 one way if booked a month ahead.
• By Train: Dehradun Railway Station (DDN) and Haridwar Junction (HW) receive direct overnight trains from Delhi, such as the Nanda Devi Express and Mussoorie Express. Sleeper tickets cost around ₹300, while 3AC runs about ₹850.
• By Road: Volvo buses run nightly from Delhi’s ISBT Kashmiri Gate to Dehradun and Rishikesh. Tickets cost ₹600 to ₹1,200, and the journey takes about 6 to 7 hours.

Getting Around

Navigating the hills requires patience. You have a few options depending on your budget and travel style.

• Private Cabs: Renting a cab for the entire 7-day trip costs between ₹18,000 and ₹25,000 (Dzire or Ertiga) including fuel and driver allowances. This is the most stress-free option.
• Shared Jeeps (Vikrams/Sumos): Local transport is cheap. A shared ride from Dehradun to Mussoorie costs roughly ₹150–₹200 per seat.
• Scooter/Bike Rental: You can rent a scooter in Rishikesh for ₹400–₹600 a day. However, riding bikes up to Mussoorie requires experience with steep hairpin bends.

Pro Tip: If you're prone to motion sickness, sit in the front seat of the cab and keep ginger candies handy for the winding mountain roads.

Top Things to Do

• White Water Rafting in Rishikesh: Tackle Grade III and IV rapids like 'The Wall' and 'Golf Course' on the Ganga.
• Witness the Ganga Aarti: Experience the spiritual energy at Parmarth Niketan or Triveni Ghat in Rishikesh.
• Stroll Mall Road in Mussoorie: Grab hot chocolate at Lovely Omelette Centre and walk down Camel's Back Road.
• Explore Dhanaulti Eco Park: Walk among towering deodar trees away from the main tourist crowds.

Accommodation Guide

Where to Eat (Local Food Guide)

Uttarakhand’s cuisine (Pahadi Khana) is wholesome, earthy, and packed with nutrients. Look out for these dishes:

• Chainsoo: A spicy, roasted black gram dal that’s high in protein.
• Aloo Ke Gutke: Boiled potatoes pan-fried with mustard seeds, turmeric, and local Himalayan herbs, usually served with bhang (hemp seed) ki chutney.
• Mandua ki Roti: Nutritious finger millet flatbreads that keep you warm in the mountains.
• Bal Mithai: A roasted khoya sweet coated in white sugar balls, native to Kumaon but available across the state.

Top spots to try:

• Kalsang Friends Corner (Mussoorie) - Best Tibetan food.
• Lovely Omelette Centre (Mussoorie) - Legendary butter-fried eggs.
• Free Spirit Cafe (Rishikesh) - Great views and wood-fired pizzas.

Budget Breakdown

Here is what a standard 7-day trip for two people looks like:

Packing Checklist

• Layered clothing (thermal innerwear if visiting between October and March).
• Sturdy trekking shoes with good grip.
• A lightweight windproof and waterproof jacket.
• Reusable water bottle to reduce plastic waste in the hills.
• Power bank (temperatures drain phone batteries faster).
• Basic first-aid kit with motion sickness tablets and band-aids.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Trying to cover Nainital, Mussoorie, and Auli all in a single 7-day trip. The distances look short on the map, but mountain driving speeds average just 30 km/h due to winding roads. Keep your itinerary geographically concentrated.

• Road Safety: Avoid driving after dark in the mountains due to unlit roads, fog, and occasional falling rocks.
• River Safety: Never step into the Ganga for a swim outside designated shallow ghats. The undercurrents in Rishikesh are deceptively strong.
• Respect Local Culture: Dress modestly when visiting temples and holy towns like Rishikesh.

Nearby Attractions

• Haridwar: Just 45 minutes south of Rishikesh, famous for its massive evening Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri.
• Rajaji National Park: Located right on the edge of Dehradun and Rishikesh, offering elephant safaris and jeep jungle safaris.
• Kanatal: Ideal if you want an extra day of absolute silence away from the commercial bustle.
