Uttarakhand 7-Day Trip Under ₹20,000: Complete Travel Plan

Introduction

I’ve lost count of how many times people have told me that a proper mountain holiday requires a hefty wallet. They book overpriced resorts in Mussoorie, take private cabs everywhere, and wonder why their budget evaporated by day three. You don’t need to break the bank to experience the magic of the Garhwal Himalayas.

Over the last decade, I’ve tested dozens of routes across Uttarakhand. This specific 7-day itinerary covers Dehradun, Rishikesh, and the lesser-known heights of Chopta and Tungnath. By utilizing state transport, staying in clean local homestays, and eating where the locals eat, you’ll easily keep your total spend under ₹20,000 per person.

Let’s dive straight into the numbers, routes, and insider secrets that travel agencies won't tell you.

Quick Facts About Uttarakhand 7-Day Trip Under ₹20,000

• Route Covered: Dehradun – Rishikesh – Chopta – Tungnath – Dehradun
• Total Distance: Approx. 550 km road journey
• Average Daily Spend: ₹2,500 – ₹2,800
• Best Suited For: Solo travelers, couples, and adventurous friend groups
• Fitness Level Required: Moderate (involves a 4 km trek to Tungnath/Chandrashila)

Pro Tip: Always carry cash in denominations of ₹100 and ₹200. UPI works in Rishikesh and Dehradun, but signal and scanner availability drop sharply once you climb past Rudraprayag toward Chopta.

Best Time to Visit

Timing makes or breaks a budget trip. If you travel during peak summer (May-June), hotel prices triple. Monsoon brings landslides.

The sweet spot for this itinerary is March to April (pleasant weather, blooming rhododendrons) or September to November (crisp mountain views after the monsoon rains clear out).

How to Reach Uttarakhand 7-Day Trip Under ₹20,000

Your journey starts in Dehradun, which acts as the major transit hub for Uttarakhand.

• By Train: Take the overnight Mussoorie Express (14041) from Old Delhi Railway Station to Dehradun. A sleeper ticket costs roughly ₹350, while 3AC runs around ₹950.
• By Bus: Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (UTC) and private Volvo buses run frequently from Delhi's ISBT Kashmiri Gate to Dehradun. Fares range from ₹450 (ordinary roadways) to ₹900 (semi-deluxe AC).
• By Air: Jolly Grant Airport (DED) in Dehradun is connected to major Indian cities, though flying might stretch a strict ₹20k budget if you don't book months in advance.

Getting Around

To stay under ₹20,000, you must ditch private cabs and embrace public transport.

• State Buses & Shared Sumos: UTC buses run between Dehradun and Rishikesh for just ₹70. From Rishikesh to Ukhimath/Chopta, take a shared jeep (Vikram or Max) which costs around ₹450 to ₹600 per seat.
• Walking: Dehradun and Rishikesh are best explored on foot. You will save money and discover hidden chai stalls that cars zip right past.

Top Things to Do

Day 1: Arrive in Dehradun & Head to Rishikesh

Arrive at Dehradun early morning via the overnight train. Grab breakfast at standard local spots near the station (try hot puri-aloo for ₹50). Board a shared auto to the Dehradun bus stand, then hop on a UTC bus to Rishikesh (₹70, 1 hour). Check into a budget hostel near Tapovan.

Day 2: Rishikesh Exploration & Café Hopping

Spend the morning walking across Laxman Jhula and visiting the Beatles Ashram (entry fee: ₹150 for Indians). In the evening, grab a seat on the steps of Parmarth Niketan for the Ganga Aarti. It’s free, deeply spiritual, and an absolute must-see.

Day 3: Rishikesh to Chopta (The Mini Switzerland)

Catch an early morning shared cab from Rishikesh to Rudraprayag, then change for Ukhimath/Chopta. The entire journey takes about 6-7 hours and costs roughly ₹600. Check into a basic alpine tent or homestay in Chopta.

Day 4: Tungnath Trek & Chandrashila Peak

Wake up before sunrise. Trek 4 km from Chopta to Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple in the world. If you have the stamina, push another 1.5 km up to Chandrashila Peak for a 360-degree view of Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Chaukhamba peaks. Return to Chopta by afternoon.

Day 5: Chopta to Dehradun

Begin your return journey. Take a shared taxi from Chopta down to Srinagar or Rudraprayag, and catch a direct bus back to Dehradun. Check into a budget hotel near the clock tower (Ghanta Ghar).

Day 6: Explore Dehradun’s Local Heritage

Visit the Forest Research Institute (FRI) campus—its British-era architecture is stunning (entry fee: ₹50). Spend the afternoon exploring Robber's Cave (Guchhupani), a natural river cave formation where you can wade through cool mountain water (entry fee: ₹35).

Day 7: Souvenir Shopping & Departure

Pick up local pahari honey, organic rajma beans, and wooden handicrafts from the Paltan Bazaar in Dehradun. Board your evening train or bus back home, well within your budget limit.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

• Deoriatal Lake: Located just a few kilometers past Ukhimath on the way to Chopta, this pristine lake offers reflections of Chaukhamba peak on its glassy surface. It requires a gentle 2.5 km uphill walk from Mastura village.
• Kunjapuri Temple Sunrise Point: Instead of crowded viewpoints in Mussoorie, take an early morning shared cab from Rishikesh to Kunjapuri Temple. The sunrise over the snow-capped Himalayan peaks will leave you speechless.

Pro Tip: Skip popular commercialized cafes in Rishikesh. Instead, seek out tiny roadside tea stalls run by locals where a cup of ginger tea costs just ₹15 and comes with authentic mountain storytelling.

Accommodation Guide

Sticking to a ₹20,000 budget means skipping luxury resorts and choosing clean, community-driven stays, backpacker hostels, and village homestays.

Where to Eat (Local Food Guide)

Eating local keeps your stomach happy and your expenses low. Avoid multi-cuisine tourist restaurants that charge Delhi prices for mediocre food.

• Garhwali Thali: Look for small local eateries (dhabas) serving Kafuli (spinach and fenugreek curry), Mandua ki Roti (finger millet flatbread), and Chainsoo (black gram dal). A hearty meal costs roughly ₹120 to ₹180.
• Recommended Spots:
• Pyali Restaurant in Rishikesh for authentic thalis.
• Kumar Sweets near Clock Tower in Dehradun for early morning bun-samosa and chai.
• Local roadside tea shacks in Chopta for Maggi and boiled eggs.

Budget Breakdown (with INR Tables)

Here is the exact math behind keeping your 7-day trip under ₹20,000.

Common Mistake: Booking cabs from Dehradun airport straight to Chopta. This single mistake will cost you ₹6,000 to ₹8,000 upfront, blowing your entire transport budget on day one. Always use public transport and shared jeeps.

Packing Checklist

Packing smart prevents unnecessary purchases on the road.

• Clothing: Layering is key. 1 thermal inner, 2 fleece jackets, 1 windproof/waterproof jacket, and quick-dry trekking pants.
• Footwear: Sturdy broken-in trekking shoes with good grip. Do not wear brand new sneakers for the Tungnath trek.
• Gear: Daypack (20-30L), reusable water bottle, flashlight/headlamp, power bank (10,000 mAh).
• First Aid: Band-aids, ORS packets, motion sickness tablets, and Diamox (consult your doctor before taking altitude sickness medication).

Nearby Attractions

If you happen to save extra money or extend your trip by a couple of days, check out these spots:

• Kanatal: A quiet pine-forested hamlet located between Chamba and Mussoorie, perfect for a peaceful afternoon.
• Vashisht Guwan (Cave): A lesser-known mystical cave near Rishikesh associated with sage Vashisht.
