The Ultimate Uttarakhand Backpacking Guide: Routes, Budgets, Hostels & Insider Tips

Introduction

I’ve spent the last six years chasing ridgelines and drinking chai in roadside dhabas across the Indian Himalayas. Out of everywhere I’ve wandered, Uttarakhand remains my absolute favorite for independent backpacking. It’s wild, chaotic, deeply spiritual, and dirt-cheap if you know how to navigate it.

Most mainstream travel sites point you toward crowded package tours in Rishikesh and Nainital. That’s not what this guide is about. We’re talking about real backpacking—hopping on local roadways buses, crashing in mountain hostels, tackling multi-day treks, and eating steaming plates of aloo ke gutke for ₹60.

Let’s dive straight into the logistics so you can plan your trip without wasting time or cash.

Quick Facts About Uttarakhand Backpacking

• Capital: Dehradun (Winter) / Bhararisain (Summer)
• Primary Currency: Indian Rupee (INR / ₹)
• Spoken Languages: Garhwali, Kumaoni, Hindi, English (in tourist hubs)
• Average Daily Budget: ₹1,000 - ₹2,000 ($12 - $24 USD)
• Major Backpacking Hubs: Rishikesh, Kasar Devi, Chopta, Munsiyari, Tosh/Sankri
• Best For: Solo travelers, budget trekkers, mountain culture seekers

Best Time to Visit

Choosing when to go depends entirely on what you want to do. If you're coming for high-altitude treks like Kedartal or Roopkund, you need the post-monsoon window from September to November. The skies are crystal clear, and the views are unreal.

If you want to escape the suffocating plains heat, April to June is great for chilling in hill stations, though tourist crowds peak then. Avoid July and August entirely unless you enjoy landslides and being socked in by heavy monsoon rains.

Pro Tip: October is the sweet spot. The monsoon dust has washed away, the air is crisp, and festive season brings incredible local food.

How to Reach Uttarakhand

Getting into the state is straightforward. Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport (DED) is the primary air hub, connected daily by flights from Delhi and Mumbai. If you're on a strict budget, trains are your best friend.

Catch the overnight Mussoorie Express from Old Delhi Railway Station to Dehradun, or the Ranikhet Express if you're heading straight into the Kumaon region towards Kathgodam. Tickets cost around ₹450 to ₹900 depending on the class.

Once you arrive at the railhead or airport, immediately head to the state roadways bus station (ISBT). Government buses (often called roadways or roadways ordinary) are unbelievably cheap, running to almost every nook of the hills.

Getting Around

Forget private cabs if you're backpacking solo. Uttarakhand's public transport network is rugged and reliable.

Shared jeeps (typically Boleros or Sumos) are the lifeline of mountain travel. You’ll find them parked near every major bus stand. A seat from Rishikesh to Joshimath costs roughly ₹600 to ₹800. Just be prepared to share the back row with four other passengers and a sack of potatoes.

For local hops within towns like Mussoorie or Almora, auto-rickshaws or walking are your best options. Walking saves money and builds your hill legs.

Top Things to Do

• Trek the Chopta-Tungnath Route: This is the highest Shiva temple in the world. The trek is short, beginner-friendly, and offers sweeping views of Nanda Devi and Chaukhamba.
• Slow Down in Kasar Devi: Skip the mainstream crowd in Almora and head to this hippie ridge where Bob Marley and Swami Vivekananda once hung out.
• White Water Rafting in Rishikesh: Even budget backpackers can spring for a ₹600 to ₹1,000 stretch down the Ganges. Book directly at Shivpuri rather than through agencies.
• Explore the Valley of Flowers: A UNESCO World Heritage site open only during monsoon/post-monsoon months. Thousands of alpine alpine flowers bloom simultaneously.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

If you want to escape the selfie-stick crowds, bypass Nainital and head straight to Munsiyari. Tucked away in the Pithoragarh district, this remote hamlet sits right opposite the Panchachuli peaks.

Another absolute gem is Sari Village, the base camp for Deoria Tal. Stay in a village homestay instead of a commercial tent. Wake up at 5 AM, hike up to the high-altitude lake, and watch the reflection of Mt. Kedar Dome hit the water while drinking sweet cardamom tea.

Accommodation Guide

Backpacking in Uttarakhand has evolved massively. Hostel chains like The Hosteller, goStops, and Live Free Hostels have set up properties across Rishikesh, Mussoorie, and Dehradun, charging ₹450 to ₹800 a night for a dorm bed.

In remote villages, homestays are your only and best option. Run by local families, they usually cost ₹600 to ₹1,000 per night, including home-cooked dinner and breakfast.

Where to Eat (Local Food Guide)

Uttarakhandi cuisine is hearty, simple, and packed with nutrition designed to beat the mountain cold. Don't leave without trying Kafuli (a dark green spinach curry), Bhang ki Chutney (cannabis seed chutney—don't worry, it's legal and food-safe), and Mandwa ki Roti (finger millet flatbread).

• Little Buddha Cafe (Rishikesh): Great views of the Ganges, cheap wood-fired pizza and chai.
• Mohan Ji Puri वाले (Devprayag): Perfect pitstop for hot puris and potato curry while riding the bus.
• Kumaon Anand Restaurant (Almora): Try authentic local thalis here for under ₹200.

Budget Breakdown (with INR tables)

Here’s a realistic breakdown of what a 7-day backpacking trip across Uttarakhand will actually cost you.

Packing Checklist

Don't overpack. You have to carry your own bag up broken stairs and across dirt trails.

• 40L to 50L Backpack with a rain cover
• Sturdy waterproof trekking shoes (break them in before the trip)
• One thermal inner set (essential for higher elevations)
• Quick-dry trekking pants and merino wool socks
• Universal power bank (electricity can be spotty in remote areas)
• Basic medical kit with ORS, band-aids, and motion sickness pills

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Underestimating mountain weather. It can go from 25°C and sunny to freezing hail in 20 minutes.

Always carry an offline map (Maps.me or Organic Maps) because cellular network vanishes the moment you enter deep valleys (BSNL works best, followed by Jio).

Solo female travelers generally find Uttarakhand very safe, but avoid walking alone on unlit mountain roads after 9 PM. Respect local religious customs, especially around shrines and temples.

Nearby Attractions

If you have extra days, you can easily cross state borders or push deeper into neighboring regions. Himachal Pradesh (specifically the Spiti Valley or Pabbar Valley) sits just across the western border and shares the same rugged charm.
