Uttarakhand in December: Snowfall, Weather & Best Places to Visit

Introduction

I still remember my first December drive up to Chopta. The windshield wipers froze solid near Ukhimath, and the air smelled distinctly of pine smoke and wet slate. Most tourists pack away their bags once October ends, assuming the mountains shut down. That’s their mistake. December is when Uttarakhand sheds its summer family-vacation skin and turns into a raw, glittering Himalayan wonderland.

If you're hunting for crisp sub-zero mornings, silent pine forests, and heavy white carpets of fresh powder, you've landed in the right place. Over the last decade of exploring these mountains in freezing weather, I’ve learned which roads actually stay open, where the best ski slopes are, and how to avoid getting stranded in a blizzard. Let’s dive into the ultimate guide for conquering Uttarakhand this December.

Quick Facts About Uttarakhand in December

• Peak Snowfall Zones: Auli, Chopta, Munsiyari, Dhanaulti, and higher reaches of Kanatal.
• Daytime Temperatures: Ranges from 10°C to 18°C in hill stations; below freezing in high altitudes.
• Nighttime Temperatures: Drops to -2°C to -8°C in places like Auli and Harsil.
• Daylight Hours: Roughly 10 hours of sunlight (sunrise around 7:00 AM, sunset by 5:30 PM).
• Main Festivals: Christmas celebrations in Mussoorie and Nainital; winter trekking events across Chamoli district.

Pro Tip: Keep an eye on local road-clearing alerts issued by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) before driving into higher altitudes after a heavy spell of snowfall.

Best Time to Visit

While December as a whole is phenomenal, the experience changes drastically depending on which week you pick.

Early December (1st to 15th) brings clear blue skies, crisp afternoon sun, and light or no snow at mid-altitudes like Mussoorie or Lansdowne. It's the best time for uninterrupted road trips and peaceful treks like Deoriatal.

Late December (16th to 31st) brings heavy tourist rushes for Christmas and New Year. This is when snowfall probabilities in Auli, Chopta, and higher Nainital peak, but hotel tariffs double and traffic jams near Dehradun-Mussoorie can test your patience.

Weather Guide

Here is what you can realistically expect from Uttarakhand's weather patterns during the transition into winter.

How to Reach Uttarakhand

Getting to the state depends entirely on your starting point and comfort level.

By Air: Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is your primary gateway. Direct flights connect Dehradun to Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. From the airport, hiring a pre-paid taxi to Rishikesh (₹1,000) or Dehradun city (₹800) takes under 45 minutes.

By Train: Haridwar Junction and Dehradun Railway Station are major terminals connected directly to Delhi, Kolkata, and Varanasi. The overnight Mussoorie Express from Old Delhi is a classic budget option.

By Road: Driving from Delhi via the newly expanded Delhi-Dehradun Expressway or Meerut Highway takes roughly 5 to 6 hours to reach the foothills. Buses operated by UTC (Uttarakhand Transport Corporation) run hourly from Delhi's ISBT Kashmiri Gate.

Getting Around

Navigating the winding mountain roads requires careful planning. Shared jeeps (Maxx or Bolero) are the lifeblood of local transit, running fixed routes between towns like Joshimath and Auli for roughly ₹70 to ₹100 per seat.

If you prefer flexibility, renting a self-drive car from Dehradun is popular, but ensure you rent a vehicle with good ground clearance (like a Mahindra Thar or compact SUV) if you're heading toward snow-prone zones. Always hire local drivers who have experience negotiating black ice and steep hairpin bends.

Top Things to Do

1. Skiing in Auli

Asia's finest artificial ski resort turns completely natural in December. Ride the 4-kilometer-long ropeway from Joshimath to Auli (₹1,000 return ticket) for jaw-dropping views of Nanda Devi. Ski equipment rentals cost roughly ₹500 per day.

2. Trekking to Deoriatal and Chopta

Begin your trek from Sari village. The 3-kilometer hike to Deoriatal takes you through dense oak forests. If weather permits, push further to Chandrashila for a 360-degree panorama of snow-capped Himalayan giants.

3. Ice Skating in Shimla... wait, Ice Skating in Mussoorie!

While Shimla has its rink, Mussoorie and Landour offer colonial-era winter walks, hot chocolate at Little Llama Cafe, and crisp strolls down Camel's Back Road without the scorching summer crowds.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Want to escape the crowds clogging up Auli and Mussoorie? Try these remote alternatives:

• Munsiyari: Tucked away in the Pithoragarh district, this base camp for the Milam Glacier trek offers majestic views of the Panchachuli peaks. December here is dead quiet and fiercely cold.
• Harsil: Located on the way to Gangotri, Harsil is famous for its apple orchards and dense pine cover. It transforms into a silent, snow-draped postcard village by mid-December.
• Kanatal: Just a two-hour drive from Dehradun, Kanatal offers pine forests, apple orchards, and a handful of eco-resorts for a peaceful weekend.

Accommodation Guide

Where you stay dictates your winter experience. In places like Auli, booking well in advance is mandatory.

• Homestays: Experience local Garhwali hospitality in villages like Sari or Munsiyari. Rates range from ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 per night, including home-cooked meals.
• Mid-Range Hotels: Clean, heated rooms with hot water facilities in towns like Joshimath, Uttarkashi, and Lansdowne range from ₹3,000 to ₹6,000 per night.
• Luxury Resorts: Properties like The Roseate Ganges in Rishikesh or Sterling Auli offer premium heating, mountain-view balconies, and guided winter nature walks starting at ₹10,000+ per night.

Where to Eat (Local Food Guide)

Mountain food in December is designed to keep your core temperature up. Don't leave without trying these local Garhwali and Kumaoni delicacies:

• Chainsoo: A protein-packed, slow-cooked black gram lentil dish flavored with garlic and dry red chillies.
• Kafuli: A rich, hearty green leafy vegetable curry made from spinach and fenugreek leaves.
• Mandua ki Roti: Finger millet flatbreads served piping hot with local ghee and jaggery.
• Bal Mithai: A roasted khoya sweet coated in white sugar balls, best picked up from local sweet shops in Almora or Srinagar.

Recommended Spot: Head to The Tavern on Mall Road in Mussoorie for warm continental food, or try local homestay kitchens for authentic Garhwali thalis.

Budget Breakdown

Planning your finances accurately prevents unwanted surprises on the road. Here is a realistic daily cost breakdown per person in INR:

Packing Checklist

Winter in Uttarakhand is unforgiving if you pack light. Make sure your backpack includes:

• Thermal innerwear (at least 2 pairs of merino wool layers).
• Heavy waterproof jacket (Gore-Tex or heavy down filled).
• Fleece-lined trek pants and thick woolen socks (pack 4 pairs).
• Sturdy trekking boots with deep lugged soles for grip on black ice.
• UV-protection sunglasses (snow blindness is a real hazard at high altitudes).
• Lip balm, cold cream, and high-SPF sunscreen.
• Portable power banks (batteries drain rapidly in sub-zero temperatures).

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Driving a standard front-wheel-drive hatchback up to Auli or Chopta after a snowstorm without snow chains. You will likely skid off the mountain edge or get hopelessly stuck.

• Altitude Sickness: Ascending rapidly from Rishikesh to Joshimath can trigger mild AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness). Drink at least 3-4 liters of water and avoid alcohol for the first 48 hours.
• Network Blackouts: Jio and Airtel work decently in major towns, but BSNB is your only lifeline in remote valleys like Harsil and Munsiyari. Always download offline Google Maps.

Nearby Attractions

If you have extra days on your itinerary, consider tacking on these nearby destinations:

• Rishikesh: Perfect for a warm-weather pit stop on your way back down to shed your heavy woolens and enjoy evening Ganga Aarti.
• Jim Corbett National Park: While hill stations freeze, the foothills remain mild and offer incredible tiger safari opportunities in December.
• Haridwar: Experience the spiritual intensity of evening prayers at Har Ki Pauri before heading home.
