Introduction
I’ve spent the last decade swapping Delhi's concrete grid for the crisp ridges of the Garhwal and Kumaon Himalayas. If you're stuck in NCR with just a Friday-to-Sunday window, you don't need to burn annual leave to touch snow or watch a sunrise over Swachh peaks. Uttarakhand is right at Delhi's doorstep, offering accessible weekend treks that get you from traffic snarls to alpine meadows in under twelve hours.
Over the years, I've watched routes like Nag Tibba and Kedarkantha transform from secret shepherd paths into bucket-list weekend missions. But crowds change the math. In this guide, I’ll break down the absolute best weekend treks in Uttarakhand from Delhi, cutting through the fluff with exact route data, honest pricing in INR, and practical tips I wish someone had given me on my first trip.
Quick Facts About Weekend Treks in Uttarakhand from Delhi
Before you pack your rucksack, let's look at the baseline metrics for doing a weekend trek out of Delhi. You’ll typically leave on a Thursday night sleeper bus or drive past midnight to beat the Muradabad toll chaos.
- Distance from Delhi: 250 km to 450 km (depending on the base camp)
- Travel Time: 8 to 14 hours by road
- Average Trek Duration: 2 to 4 days on foot
- Max Altitude: 3,500m to 3,850m (11,400ft to 12,500ft)
- Fitness Level Required: Moderate (ability to jog 5 km in 30 minutes)
Pro Tip: Never drive yourself back to Delhi on Sunday evening after a high-altitude trek. The post-trip fatigue combined with NH9 gridlock makes falling asleep at the wheel a genuine hazard. Take an overnight Volvo bus instead.
Best Time to Visit
Choosing your window depends entirely on whether you want blooming rhododendrons or knee-deep powder snow. Uttarakhand has distinct trekking seasons, and picking the wrong month means either dodging relentless leeches or sliding off icy ridges.
- December to March: Prime snow trekking season. Kedarkantha and Brahmatal turn into winter wonderlands.
- April to June: Spring blooms, clear skies, and pleasant daytime temperatures (15°C to 20°C).
- July to August: Monsoon season. Avoid low-altitude trails due to landslides and leeches. High-altitude trails like Valley of Flowers are stunning but risky.
- September to November: Post-monsoon clarity. Crystal-clear views of Himalayan peaks with crisp, chilly nights.

How to Reach Weekend Treks in Uttarakhand from Delhi
Your transit strategy depends on your base camp. For Sankri (Kedarkantha/Har Ki Dun), you head via Dehradun. For Pantwari (Nag Tibba), you route through Mussoorie or Kempty Fall.
- By Bus: Take an overnight Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (UTC) Volvo or HRTC bus from ISBT Kashmiri Gate to Dehradun (₹600 - ₹1,200). From Dehradun railway station, shared cabs to Sankri cost around ₹700 per seat.
- By Train: The Nanda Devi Express (12402) or Dehradun Express (12687) from New Delhi to Dehradun or Haridwar overnight. It’s reliable and budget-friendly.
- By Car: Drive via NH 334 through Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, and Roorkee. Watch out for stray cattle near Khatauli and aggressive truck traffic near Haridwar bypass.
Getting Around
Once you reach regional transport hubs like Dehradun, Rishikesh, or Uttarkashi, local mobility shifts to shared utility vehicles (Maxos and Boleros).
- Shared Jeeps: The lifeline of Garhwal hills. They run from Dehradun RTO office to Sankri, Joshimath, or Chopta starting at 5:00 AM.
- Hired Cabs: Renting a private Dzire or Ertiga from Dehradun for a weekend return trip runs between ₹6,000 to ₹9,000.
- On Foot: Every trail starts where the motorable road ends. Pack light because porters cost ₹800–₹1,000 per day if you can't carry your own daypack.
Top Things to Do
While summiting is the primary goal, a weekend trek offers micro-adventures that elevate the experience beyond physical exertion.
- Stargazing at High Altitude Camps: Set up camp at Juda ka Talab or Lohajung and witness the Milky Way without light pollution.
- Summit Sunrises: Push for the summit of Kedarkantha or Chandrashila before dawn to watch the first rays hit peaks like Bandarpoonch and Nanda Devi.
- Village Exploration: Spend an extra afternoon wandering through wooden stilt houses in Sankri or Sari village.
Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path
Skip the overcrowded Nag Tibba base trail and try these alternatives instead:
- Deo Tibba Ridge (Near Chopta): While everyone flocks to Tungnath, a short ridge climb above Deoria Tal offers isolated camping with zero foot traffic.
- Kuari Pass Winter Route: Instead of the standard long circuit, do the Auli-to-Khullara stretch for a quick two-day alpine fix.
Accommodation Guide
Weekend treks rely heavily on homestays, guest houses, and alpine tents.
- Homestays: Run by locals in Sankri and Lohajung (e.g., Swargarohini Homestay). Cost: ₹800–₹1,200 per night including home-cooked dal and rice.
- Tented Campsites: Provided by trekking operators at Juda ka Talab. Shared dome tents with sleeping bags.
Where to Eat
Mountain calories are earned, not given. Don't expect fancy menus.
- Local Staples: Eat piping hot Aloo Ke Gutke, Mandua (ragi) ki roti, and fresh Pahadi dal at local dhabas.
- Recommended Stop: Prakash Lodge & Restaurant in Mori on the way to Sankri serves the best butter tea and fresh parathas.
