Introduction
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve stood on the rocky banks of Brahmpuri or Marine Drive, watching bewildered travelers step onto rafts wearing thick denim jeans and cotton hoodies. Within five minutes of hitting the water, they're soaked, freezing, and weighed down like anchors. River rafting in Rishikesh isn't just a casual float; you’re tackling Class III and IV rapids like 'The Wall' and 'Golf Course'.
What you wear can make or break your entire adventure on the holy Ganges. After leading dozens of trips here over the last decade, I’ve put together the definitive guide on what to wear, what to leave behind, and how to stay comfortable while battling freezing Himalayan waters.
Quick Facts About Rishikesh Rafting
Rishikesh is the undisputed capital of river rafting in India. The river stretches range from short 9 km runs to intense 36 km expeditions starting from Kaudiyala down to Rishikesh.
Pro Tip: Always book your rafting through certified operators registered with the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board.
Best Time to Visit
The rafting season in Rishikesh generally runs from mid-September through June. July and August are strictly off-limits due to monsoon floods when the Ganges turns brown, swells dangerously, and government authorities ban all water sports.
If you want warm weather and thrilling rapids, March to May is prime time. If you prefer crisp air and don't mind wearing a thin wetsuit layer, November to January offers crystal-clear turquoise water.

How to Reach Rishikesh
Rishikesh is well-connected by road, rail, and air. The nearest airport is Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport (DED), located about 20 km away. A taxi from the airport to Laxman Jhula costs around ₹800 to ₹1,000.
If you're taking the train, Yog Nagari Rishikesh (YNRK) station receives direct trains from major cities like Delhi. Alternatively, overnight Volvo buses from Delhi’s Kashmiri Gate ISBT drop you at Rishikesh bus station for roughly ₹500–₹1,200.
Getting Around
Rishikesh is a compact town, especially the areas around Tapovan and Laxman Jhula. Auto-rickshaws are widely available and charge ₹50 to ₹150 depending on the distance.
Pro Tip: Renting a scooty from rental shops near Tapovan costs about ₹400–₹500 a day and gives you the freedom to explore the winding mountain roads at your own pace.
Top Things to Do
Beyond braving the rapids, Rishikesh offers a mix of spirituality and adrenaline. Catch the evening Aarti at Parmarth Niketan, hike up to Kunjapuri Temple for sunrise, or try bungee jumping at Mohan Chatti—run by Jumpin Heights, India's highest fixed-platform bungee.
Spend your afternoons cafe-hopping in Tapovan. Popular spots like Beatles Ashram (Chaurasi Kutia) offer a deep dive into the town's rich musical and spiritual history.
Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path
Skip the crowded Triveni Ghat for sunset and head up to Patna Waterfall or Garud Chatti waterfall. While Patna involves a steep 1.5 km uphill trek, you'll find natural limestone caves and tranquil pools away from the tourist hordes.
Another hidden gem is Phool Chatti, famous for its silent yoga retreats and ancient stone bridges spanning minor streams feeding the Ganges.
Accommodation Guide
Whether you're backpacking or looking for a luxury wellness retreat, Rishikesh has it all. Hostels dominate Tapovan, while luxury resorts sit closer to the foothills in Shivpuri.
Where to Eat (local food guide)
Rishikesh is strictly vegetarian and alcohol-free in most municipal areas due to its holy status. Head to Little Buddha Cafe near Laxman Jhula for wood-fired pizzas overlooking the river.
For authentic Garhwali thalis, try Chotiwala near Ram Jhula—it’s an iconic institution. If you want organic vegan bowls and incredible coffee, Free Spirit Cafe in Tapovan is unmatched.

Common Mistake: Panicking if you fall into the rapid. Stay calm, float on your back with your feet pointing downstream toward the surface, and let your life jacket do the work until the safety kayaker or raft pulls you in.
