Introduction: The Realities of Gulmarg's Climate
Gulmarg is not your average hill station. Sitting at an altitude of 2,650 meters at the base and scaling up to 3,979 meters at Apharwat Peak, the weather here is famously unforgiving. If you are planning a trip during the peak winter season from December to March, temperatures regularly plummet to -10°C or even -15°C at higher elevations. When you step out of the second stage of the Gulmarg Gondola onto the powdery slopes of Apharwat, biting winds will cut through ordinary woolens within seconds.
The secret to surviving and thriving in this alpine wonderland isn't packing the heaviest single coat you own. Instead, it is all about mastering the science of technical layering. Whether you are hitting the ski slopes, riding the cable car, or taking a gentle pony ride through the meadow, your comfort depends entirely on trapping body heat while blocking wind and moisture. This guide breaks down exactly what to wear in Gulmarg to stay warm, dry, and mobile.
The Three-Layer Arctic System
To stay warm in sub-zero alpine conditions, you must adopt the mountaineer's three-layer rule. Relying on a single thick jacket fails because trapped sweat freezes against your skin when you stop moving. Here is how to construct your defense against the cold:
1. The Base Layer (Moisture Management)
Your base layer sits directly against your skin. Its sole job is to wick sweat away so you do not get chilled. Avoid cotton completely; cotton absorbs moisture and holds it against your body, draining your core temperature.- Material: Merino wool or high-grade synthetic polyester/spandex blends.
- Items: Full-sleeve thermal tops and thermal bottoms (leggings).
- Pro Tip: Invest in dual-layer thermal sets rated for sub-zero temperatures (e.g., Decathlon's Wedze series or equivalent mountaineering brands).
2. The Mid Layer (Insulation)
Your mid layer traps body heat generated by your muscles. It acts as your portable radiator.- Material: Fleece jackets, heavy wool sweaters, or lightweight down jackets.
- Items: A full-zip fleece jacket or a compressible down vest.
- Pro Tip: Having a full-zip fleece makes it easy to shed a layer if you start sweating while hiking up the Kongdoori slopes.
3. The Outer Layer (Shell)
Your outer layer shields you from wind, falling snow, and wet sleet. Without a windproof and waterproof shell, your insulation layers become useless.- Material: Gore-Tex or heavily treated nylon/polyester shells with taped seams.
- Items: A heavy-duty waterproof ski jacket and waterproof snow trousers (salopettes).
- Pro Tip: Ensure your outer jacket has a hood that can be cinched tightly around your face to block high-altitude gusts.
Seasonal Breakdown: Winter vs Summer Wardrobe
What you pack depends heavily on whether you are visiting during the snow season or the lush summer months.
Winter Wardrobe (December – March)
This is full alpine survival mode. You need the complete three-layer system detailed above.- Upper Body: Thermal top + fleece mid-layer + heavy waterproof puffer/ski jacket.
- Lower Body: Thermal bottom + fleece-lined joggers or heavy trousers + waterproof snow pants.
- Hands & Head: Waterproof ski gloves, balaclava or fleece beanie, and a neck gaiter.
Summer & Monsoon Wardrobe (April – September)
Summer in Gulmarg is delightfully cool during the day (15°C to 24°C), but temperatures drop sharply as soon as the sun dips behind the Pir Panjal range.- Upper Body: T-shirts or light shirts for daytime walks, coupled with a sturdy fleece jacket or windcheater for evenings.
- Lower Body: Comfortable trekking pants or thick jeans. Avoid shorts; alpine sun can cause severe UV burns and mountain winds are chilly.
- Hands & Head: A light sun hat, sunglasses with high UV protection, and a light woolen cap for early morning meadow strolls.
Footwear, Socks, and Traction Gear
Cold feet ruin any mountain trip instantly. Standard sneakers or fashion boots will soak through within five minutes in Gulmarg's deep snow.
Choosing Your Footwear
- Winter: High-ankle, waterproof snow boots with deep rubber treads. Insulated winter boots rated for -15°C are ideal.
- Summer: Sturdy trekking shoes or waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support for meadow walks and pony tracks.
Socks Matter
- Wear thick, moisture-wicking merino wool socks. Bring at least 3-4 pairs.
- Pro Tip: Never layer two pairs of tight socks inside your boots; it restricts blood circulation and actually makes your feet colder. Ensure your boots have enough wiggle room for your toes.
Crampons & Ice Cleats
If you are walking around the main bowl or heading up to Phase 1 during peak winter, packed snow turns into sheets of black ice.- Buy or rent slip-on rubber anti-slip cleats (microspikes) for around ₹200–₹400 at local shops in Gulmarg town. They strap onto any standard shoe and prevent nasty falls.
Essential Cold-Weather Accessories
Never neglect the extremities. Most of your body heat escapes through your head, neck, and hands.
- UV Protection Sunglasses: Snow reflection is blinding at high altitudes (especially Phase 2 Apharwat Peak). High-grade sunglasses with UV400 protection are mandatory to prevent snow blindness.
- Gloves: Carry a two-tier glove system—thin liner gloves for handling phones or cameras, paired with waterproof outer ski mittens.
- Headwear & Face Masks: A fleece balaclava or windproof ski mask protects your nose and cheeks from frostbite during high-speed gondola rides or sledging.
- Sunscreen & Lip Balm: High-altitude UV rays are brutal. Pack SPF 50+ sunscreen and a heavy-duty lip balm with SPF.
Renting vs Buying Gear in Gulmarg
If you only visit the snow once every few years, buying expensive alpine gear doesn't make financial sense. Gulmarg has a thriving rental ecosystem right at the base station and near the Gondola parking lot.
- What to Rent: Heavy waterproof snow jackets, snow pants, waterproof gumboots/snow boots, and skiing equipment (skis, poles, boots, helmets).
- What to Buy: Base layer thermals, socks, gloves, beanies, and sunglasses. Buying intimate wear and socks for hygiene reasons is always recommended.
- Rental Rates (Approximate INR):
- Snow Jacket & Pants Combo: ₹500 – ₹1,000 per day
- Snow Boots / Gumboots: ₹200 – ₹400 per day
- Complete Ski Equipment Set: ₹1,500 – ₹3,000 per day
- Bargaining Tip: Rental rates are somewhat standardized, but always inspect zippers, waterproof lining, and boot soles before paying. Do not hesitate to ask for a swap if a zipper is jammed.
Common Packing Mistakes to Avoid
- Wearing Denim Jeans in Snow: Denim absorbs moisture instantly, freezes solid, and conducts cold directly to your bones. Leave jeans behind in winter.
- Ignoring Sun Protection: Thinking you only need sunscreen at the beach is a costly error. Mountain snow reflects up to 80% of UV rays, leading to severe facial sunburns.
- Overpacking Cotton: Sweating into cotton thermals while hiking Kongdoori ridge will cause rapid hypothermia when you rest.
- Forgetting Lip Protection: Chapped, bleeding lips are the most common souvenir of unprepared travelers in Gulmarg.
- Buying Cheap Sunglasses: Fashion shades without UV protection allow harmful rays to damage your retinas when amplified by snow glare.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Do I need heavy snow boots for Gulmarg in winter?
Yes, waterproof, high-ankle snow boots with insulated lining and deep treads are essential. If you don't own any, you can easily rent heavy snow boots or gumboots right at the Gulmarg base station for ₹200 to ₹400 per day.
2. Can I wear jeans in Gulmarg during winter?
No, wearing denim jeans in winter is a major mistake. Denim absorbs moisture, freezes in sub-zero temperatures, and conducts cold directly to your skin, increasing the risk of hypothermia.
3. How cold does it get at Apharwat Peak (Phase 2 Gondola)?
Temperatures at Apharwat Peak (3,979m) regularly drop to -10°C to -18°C during winter, accompanied by harsh, freezing winds. You must wear a complete three-layer system including a windproof outer shell and balaclava.
4. Are thermal inner layers necessary for summer in Gulmarg?
Thermal inners are generally unnecessary during summer (April to September). However, evening temperatures can drop sharply to single digits, so carrying a reliable fleece jacket or windcheater is mandatory.
5. Where can I rent ski clothing and boots in Gulmarg?
Numerous authorized rental shops operate directly at the Gulmarg base camp, near the Gondola ticketing counter, and adjacent to major hotels. You can rent complete waterproof snow suits, boots, and ski gear on a daily basis.
6. Is it mandatory to wear sunglasses in Gulmarg?
Yes, UV-protected sunglasses or ski goggles are essential during winter and sunny spring days. Snow reflects harsh ultraviolet rays, and failing to wear eye protection can cause painful snow blindness.
7. What kind of socks should I pack for Gulmarg snow?
Pack thick, moisture-wicking merino wool socks. Avoid cotton socks because they retain sweat, making your feet damp and freezing cold inside your snow boots.
8. How many layers should I wear for snow activities in Gulmarg?
You should wear three distinct layers: a moisture-wicking base layer (thermal inner), an insulating mid-layer (fleece or down), and a windproof, waterproof outer shell (ski jacket and snow pants).
9. Can I buy winter clothing locally in Srinagar instead of Gulmarg?
Yes, buying or renting winter gear in Srinagar (near Lal Chowk or Dal Lake) or directly in Gulmarg is very convenient. Srinagar often offers a wider variety of Kashmiri woolen shawls, pherans, and heavy coats.
