Introduction
If you've ever stood at the edge of an alpine ridge watching fat flakes drift down over pine forests, you know why winter in the Indian Himalayas is addictive. I have spent the last decade chasing the first powder drops across the Garhwal and Kumaon ranges, and people constantly ask me one question: when does snowfall actually start in Uttarakhand?
The short answer is that high-altitude towns above 2,500 meters get their dusting as early as late October or November, but heavy, reliable snowfall hits between December and February. If you want pristine white slopes without getting stranded by avalanches, timing is everything. Let's break down exactly when and where you need to be.
Quick Facts About Snowfall in Uttarakhand
- Earliest Snowfall: Late October to mid-November (Auli, Kedarnath, Gangotri).
- Peak Snowfall Months: January and February.
- Best Accessible Snow Destinations: Auli, Chopta, Munsiyari, Dhanaulti.
- Average Winter Temperature: Ranges from 10°C during daytime to -5°C or lower at night.
- Main Access Hub: Dehradun (Jolly Grant Airport) and Rishikesh/Haridwar for rail travelers.
Pro Tip: Don't rely solely on weather apps for mountain forecasts. Local taxi drivers and tea-stall owners in Joshimath or Rudraprayag always know if a western disturbance is bringing snow before the internet does.
Best Time to Visit
Timing your winter trip depends entirely on what you want out of the snow. If you want to witness the dramatic transition from autumn leaves to a white landscape, late November to early December is magical. The crowds are thin, and home-stays are easy to book.
However, if you are heading up specifically for skiing, snowboarding, or thick knee-deep snow, lock in your plans between January 5th and February 20th. This window guarantees heavy accumulations in spots like Auli and Harsil. March still offers snow at higher elevations, but it tends to get slushy by the afternoon.

How to Reach Uttarakhand Snow Destinations
Reaching the snow depends on your starting point, but Dehradun serves as the main gateway.
- By Air: Jolly Grant Airport (DED) in Dehradun is connected to major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. From the airport, you can hire a private cab or take a shared taxi to Rishikesh.
- By Train: Rishikesh, Haridwar, and Dehradun railway stations receive daily trains from Delhi. The overnight Yoga Express or Mussoorie Express are popular choices.
- By Road: From Delhi, drive via the NH 334 to Rishikesh, then take the NH 7 toward Devprayag and Karnaprayag for Chamoli/Auli, or NH 309 toward Rudraprayag for Chopta.
Getting Around
Navigating snowy mountain roads is not for amateur drivers. Public buses (like the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation buses) run along major highways, but they stop operating if heavy snow blocks routes like the road from Joshimath to Auli.
For remote snow zones, your best bet is hiring a local 4x4 vehicle (like a Mahindra Bolero or Scorpio) with an experienced mountain driver. Drivers in Joshimath and Ukhimath know every icy patch and blind turn. If you are heading to Auli, the Joshimath-Auli ropeway is a thrilling alternative, though it undergoes maintenance checks periodically—always verify its operational status before you arrive.
Top Things to Do
Snow trips aren't just about staring out a window with a cup of chai. Here is how to make the most of your time:
- Skiing in Auli: Auli boasts some of the best ski slopes in Asia. You can rent ski gear near the lower ropeway station for roughly ₹500 to ₹1,000 per day.
- Trekking to Tungnath & Chandrashila: Starting from Chopta, the 4 km trek to Tungnath (the highest Shiva temple in the world) transforms into a snowy wonderland in January. Hire a local guide (approx. ₹1,500) if the trail is covered in fresh powder.
- Camping under the Stars: Winter camping in meadows like Dayara Bugyal or Chopta is unforgettable. Pack sub-zero rated sleeping bags.
- Photography: Capture the golden hour hitting snow-capped peaks like Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Chaukhamba.
Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path
Everyone flocks to Auli, but if you want silence and undisturbed snowdrifts, look elsewhere:
- Munsiyari: Located in the Kumaon region, this gateway to the Johar Valley offers jaw-dropping views of the Panchachuli peaks. It gets less foot traffic than Garhwal destinations.
- Harsil: Situated on the banks of the Bhagirathi River near Gangotri, Harsil is surrounded by dense apple orchards that turn into a quiet snow paradise in January.
- Kanatal: Just a short drive from Mussoorie, Kanatal offers pine forests blanketed in white without the massive commercial tourist rush.
Pro Tip: Visit Mundali near Chakrata for deep powder snow and absolute solitude. It requires a short trek through dense deodar forests from the nearest motorable road.
Accommodation Guide
Where you stay dictates your comfort in sub-zero temperatures. Book properties that offer room heaters or traditional bukharis (wood-burning stoves).
- Budget: Guesthouses, GMVN tourist rest houses, and village home-stays in places like Chopta or Joshimath (₹800 to ₹1,500 per night).
- Mid-Range: Comfortable hotels with modern amenities and backup generators, such as Hotel Mount View in Joshimath or Himalayan Eco Lodges in Chopta (₹2,500 to ₹5,000 per night).
- Luxury: Premium resorts like The Cliff Top Club in Auli or Salvus Cottage in Kanatal (₹8,000 to ₹15,000+ per night).
Where to Eat (Local Food Guide)
Mountain food in Uttarakhand is designed to keep you warm from the inside out. When you are shivering in the snow, seek out these local delicacies:
- Kafuli: A thick, nutritious green curry made from spinach and fenugreek leaves, best paired with mandua (finger millet) roti.
- Chainsoo: A protein-packed black gram daal that is roasted and ground before slow-cooking.
- Phaanu: A mixed lentil soup that warms you up instantly after a trek.
- Singhori & Bal Mithai: Traditional Kumaoni sweets found in local sweet shops across Almora and Munsiyari.
Where to eat: Stop at Himalayan Cafe in Joshimath for piping hot momos and ginger tea, or grab a rustic thali at any local dhaba along the Badrinath highway.

Packing Checklist
Packing for mountain snow is a science. Do not rely on casual winter jackets bought for city winters.
- Base Layers: Thermal tops and bottoms (merino wool or synthetic moisture-wicking fabrics).
- Outerwear: Windproof and waterproof down jacket rated for sub-zero temperatures.
- Footwear: Waterproof snow boots with good tread. Avoid canvas shoes completely.
- Accessories: Woolen beanies, touchscreen-friendly thermal gloves, UV-protection sunglasses (snow blindness is real), and woolen socks.
- Skincare: Heavy-duty cold cream, lip balm with SPF, and sunscreen.
Safety Tips & Common Mistakes
Common Mistake: Many travelers underestimate mountain driving and attempt to drive standard front-wheel-drive sedans onto icy inclines without snow chains. Always rent a 4x4 or hire a local driver.
- Stay Hydrated: Dehydration happens quickly in cold, high-altitude air. Drink plenty of warm water.
- Altitude Sickness (AMS): Ascend slowly. If you experience persistent headaches or nausea in places like Auli or Joshimath, descend immediately.
- Power Outages: Heavy snowfall frequently knocks out electricity in remote villages. Carry power banks and headlamps.
Nearby Attractions
- Joshimath: The base town for Auli, featuring ancient temples like the Narsingh Temple.
- Rishikesh: Stop here on your way back for yoga classes and a relaxing café crawl along the Ganga.
