Where to Stay in Nainital: Mall Road vs Tallital vs Mallital

Introduction

I’ve lost count of how many travelers I’ve met who booked a random hotel in Nainital, only to realize their 'lake view' room faced a concrete wall or required climbing 150 vertical stairs with heavy luggage. Nainital is a horseshoe-shaped valley wrapped around the emerald Naini Lake, and your experience changes completely depending on which end of the horseshoe you call home.

Choosing where to stay comes down to a three-way battle: Mall Road, Tallital, and Mallital. Each area serves a completely different type of traveler. Let's break them down so you don't make an expensive mistake.

Quick Facts About Nainital Neighborhoods

Nainital sits at an altitude of 2,084 meters in Uttarakhand's Kumaon region. The town is split neatly by the lake into two main ends—Tallital (the southern/lower end) and Mallital (the northern/upper end)—connected by the bustling Mall Road running along the eastern shore.

Best Time to Visit

Most travelers head to Nainital between March and June to escape the blistering plains of North India. However, if you want authentic quiet, October to February brings crisp mountain air and occasional winter snowfall.

Pro Tip: Avoid the peak summer weekends (May to mid-July) unless you enjoy bumper-to-bumper traffic jams right on Mall Road that take hours to clear.

How to Reach Nainital

Getting to Nainital is straightforward, but plan your final leg carefully depending on your accommodation zone.

• By Air: The nearest airport is Pantnagar Airport (PGH), located 70 km away. A taxi from the airport to Nainital costs around ₹2,000 to ₹2,500.
• By Train: Kathgodam Railway Station is the terminus, situated 34 km from Nainital. Shared jeeps and buses run constantly from Kathgodam to Tallital bus stand for about ₹150–₹200 per seat.
• By Road: Overnight Volvo buses from Delhi’s Anand Vihar or Kashmiri Gate drop you directly at Tallital.

Getting Around

Once you arrive, forget about driving your own car around town. Parking is a nightmare.

• Walking: The best way to explore Mall Road and the flat lakeside paths.
• Rickshaws: Hand-pulled rickshaws operate along Mall Road, costing ₹50–₹100 for a scenic ride.
• Taxis: Local cabs are readily available at Tallital and Mallital stands for day excursions to Kainchi Dham or the lake tour.

Top Things to Do

No matter where you base yourself, make time for these classic experiences:

• Boating on Naini Lake: Rent a traditional wooden rowboat at the Naina Devi Boat Club. Cost is around ₹210 to ₹420 per hour depending on the boat type.
• Snow View Point: Take the ropeway cable car from Mallital (₹300 return ticket) for sweeping views of the Himalayan peaks like Nanda Devi.
• Mall Road Evening Stroll: Walk from Tallital to Mallital at sunset, stopping for hot tea and roasted corn (bhutta).

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Escape the central crowds by exploring these lesser-known spots:

• Tiffin Top (Dorothy’s Seat): A moderate 4 km trek through oak and pine forests from Mallital leads to panoramic valley views.
• Eco Cave Gardens: A network of interconnected rocky caves ideal for families and kids, located in Mallital.

Accommodation Guide: Mall Road vs Tallital vs Mallital

1. Mall Road: The Action Central

Mall Road runs right along the eastern edge of the lake. If you stay here, you step out of your hotel and immediately land in the middle of restaurants, shops, and boat piers.

• Who it is for: Shoppers, food lovers, and travelers who want everything within a 5-minute walking radius.
• Top Hotels: The Metropole Hotel, Hotel balancing heritage with modern comfort.
• The Catch: It is loud. Car horns, shouting vendors, and heavy foot traffic continue late into the evening. Finding parking if you drive up is exceptionally difficult.

2. Tallital: The Practical Gateway

Tallital sits at the southern end of the lake. It is where the bus station, railway taxi stand, and main entry roads converge. It feels less polished and more utilitarian than the rest of the lakefront.

• Who it is for: Budget travelers, backpackers, and those arriving late by bus or train who want a quick check-in without navigating narrow hillside lanes.
• Top Hotels: Hotel Krishanraj, Hotel Lakeside.
• The Catch: It lacks the pristine, postcard charm of Mallital. The traffic around the taxi stand can feel chaotic and dusty during peak arrival times.

3. Mallital: The Peaceful Heritage Zone

Mallital occupies the northern, quieter end of the lake. It features colonial-era architecture, sprawling properties, and direct access to the ropeway and Raj Bhawan road.

• Who it is for: Families, luxury travelers, honeymooners, and anyone seeking peace, clean air, and unobstructed lake views.
• Top Hotels: The Manu Maharani, Shervani Hilltop.
• The Catch: Properties here often sit up steep hillsides. If your hotel isn't right on the flat lake level, expect a strenuous uphill walk every time you return from town.

Where to Eat

Nainital's food scene blends Kumaoni flavors with North Indian staples and Tibetan momos.

• Sonam Fast Food (Mall Road): Famous for authentic Tibetan mutton and chicken momos. Expect to pay ₹100–₹150 per plate.
• Machan (Mall Road): A multi-level restaurant offering great lake views and solid butter chicken.
• Sakley’s Restaurant & Pastry Shop (Mall Road): A legendary institution operating since 1944. Order their sizzlers and fresh blueberry cheesecake.
