Introduction
I get this question in my inbox almost every week: "How do I fit Nainital, Mussoorie, and Rishikesh into one single trip without spending half my vacation stuck in a car?" It is a classic Uttarakhand dilemma. These three destinations sit in completely different corners of the Kumaon and Garhwal regions, meaning a poorly planned route will have you backtracking through the plains of Dehradun and Kathgodam multiple times.
After driving this exact circuit half a dozen times over the last decade, I have figured out the most efficient flow. You want to move in a clean loop starting from Delhi, heading east to Kumaon (Nainital), cutting across the lower Himalayas to Garhwal (Mussoorie), and finishing downstream in the yoga capital (Rishikesh) before looping back to Delhi. Let us break down how to execute this flawlessly.
Quick Facts About the Uttarakhand Circuit
Before you book your cabs, you need to understand the sheer scale of this road trip. You are looking at a total driving distance of roughly 750 to 800 kilometers depending on your exact stops.
- Total Duration Needed: 8 to 10 days minimum.
- Starting Point: New Delhi.
- Regions Covered: Kumaon (Nainital) and Garhwal (Mussoorie & Rishikesh).
- Ideal Vehicle: Ground clearance matters. A compact SUV like a Brezza or Creta makes the mountain switchbacks much more comfortable.
Best Time to Visit
Timing makes or breaks your Uttarakhand experience. If you hit Mussoorie in peak July, you will deal with relentless monsoons and cloud-covered viewpoints. If you hit Nainital in January, prepare for bone-chilling temperatures.
Weather Guide
Here is what you can expect month by month across the three destinations:
How to Reach
The most practical gateway for this circuit is New Delhi, as it houses Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) and major railway hubs like New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS) and Old Delhi (DLI).
- To Nainital First: Take the overnight Ranikhet Express from Old Delhi to Kathgodam (approx. ₹600-₹1,500). From Kathgodam railway station, hire a local taxi to Nainital (34 km, 1.5 hours, approx. ₹1,200).
- By Road from Delhi: Rent a self-drive car or book a private cab from Delhi. The drive to Nainital takes roughly 6 to 7 hours via NH 9 (300 km).
Getting Around
Navigating between these towns requires a mix of private hiring and local transport. Public buses exist (Uttarakhand Transport Corporation), but they severely limit your flexibility.
Pro Tip: Do not attempt to drive a hatchback loaded with five adults up the steepest sections of Mussoorie (like Library Bazaar to Landour). Rent an SUV with a reliable driver who knows how to handle hill traffic and aggressive local bus drivers.
Top Things to Do
In Nainital
- Boating on Naini Lake: Rent a traditional paddle boat or rowboat. Early morning at 7:00 AM offers the most serene reflections.
- Snow View Point: Take the aerial ropeway (approx. ₹300 per person) for panoramic views of Nanda Devi.
- Mall Road Stroll: Walk fromital Tallital to Mallital, picking up local candles and wooden artifacts.
In Mussoorie
- Camel's Back Road: Walk this 3-kilometer stretch at sunset. The rock formation genuinely looks like a sitting camel.
- Kempty Falls: A classic tourist spot, though commercialized. Go early in the morning to beat the day-trippers from Dehradun.
- Gun Hill: Take the second oldest ropeway in India for views of the Doon Valley.
In Rishikesh
- River Rafting: Tackle the 16 km stretch from Marine Drive to NIM Beach (approx. ₹1,000–₹1,500 per person).
- Attend Parmarth Niketan Ganga Aarti: Experience the spiritual chant-filled evening ritual on the river banks.
- The Beatles Ashram: Explore the graffiti-covered ruins where the famous band stayed in 1968 (Entry fee: ₹150 for Indians, ₹600 for foreigners).
Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path
If you want to escape the crowded tourist hubs, add these secret spots to your itinerary:
- Pangot (Near Nainital): Located just 15 km past Nainital, this quiet hamlet is a birdwatcher's paradise with zero urban chaos.
- Landour (Near Mussoorie): Just 4 km above Mussoorie's clock tower. Visit Char Dukaan for morning pancakes and walk past Ruskin Bond's favorite haunts.
- Neelkanth Mahadev Temple trek (Near Rishikesh): Instead of driving up, take the 22 km jungle trek from Swarg Ashram if you love endurance hiking.
Accommodation Guide
Choosing where to stay can make or break your sleep quality. Avoid properties right on the main noisy intersections.
- Nainital: Stay near Mallital for quieter boutique hotels overlooking the northern tip of the lake.
- Mussoorie: Look for heritage properties in Landour for authentic British-era charm and valley views.
- Rishikesh: Book a riverside camp or yoga resort in Tapovan for easy access to cafes and adventure operators.
Where to Eat (Local Food Guide)
Uttarakhand cuisine is earthy, nutritious, and heavy on lentils and local herbs.
- Mandua ki Roti & Dal: Try this finger-millet flatbread with urad dal at local Kumaoni kitchens.
- Cafe de Landour (Mussoorie): Incredible wood-fired pizzas and coffee right next to Sister's Bazaar.
- The Sitting Elephant (Rishikesh): Excellent rooftop views of the Ganga coupled with wood-fired pizzas and local thalis.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes
Common Mistake: Trying to drive straight from Nainital to Mussoorie in a single day. The distance is roughly 290 kilometers, but due to winding mountain roads, it takes 8 to 9 exhausting hours. Always break your journey with an overnight stop in Haridwar or Dehradun if needed.
- Road Safety: Horn usage is mandatory on blind mountain curves. Do not attempt overtaking on single-lane hairpin turns.
- Scams: Beware of unauthorized local guides at Kempty Falls or Naini Lake who quote exorbitant rates.
