Chandrashila Trek Guide: Route, Best Time, Difficulty & Cost

Introduction

I still remember my first time standing at 13,000 feet on the Chandrashila summit, watching the sunrise paint the peaks of Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Chaukhamba in blinding gold. It's the kind of view that ruins normal vacations for you. Unlike grueling Himalayan expeditions that take weeks, the Chandrashila trek packs a serious alpine punch into a relatively short weekend window.

Starting from the grassy meadows of Chopta—often called the Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand—the trail takes you past Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple in the world. Whether you're a first-timer testing your lungs at high altitude or a seasoned hiker looking for a quick winter snow fix, this guide gives you the unvarnished truth on routes, costs, and local secrets.

Quick Facts About Chandrashila Trek

Before you pack your bags, let's look at the hard numbers. I've led dozens of trips up this mountain, and knowing these stats upfront will keep you from packing the kitchen sink.

• Maximum Altitude: 3,692 meters (12,110 feet) above sea level.
• Trek Distance: Roughly 5 kilometers one way from Chopta (10 km round trip).
• Starting Point: Chopta.
• Duration: 2 Days / 1 Night from Haridwar or Rishikesh.
• Difficulty Level: Easy to Moderate. Perfect for beginners with a decent cardio base.
• Permits: Forest entry fee of ₹150 per person is collected at the Chopta checkpost.

Pro Tip: Don't let the 'easy' tag fool you. The final 1 kilometer from Tungnath temple to Chandrashila peak is a steep, rocky staircase that will test your calves at altitude.

Best Time to Visit

Timing makes or breaks this trek. If you want green meadows and clear skies, aim for autumn or spring. If you want a knee-deep winter wonderland with zero crowds, pack your microspikes for January.

• Spring (March to April): Rhododendrons bloom in brilliant shades of red and pink all along the trail. Temperatures are mild.
• Summer (May to June): Pleasant weather during the day, cool at nights. The trail gets quite busy with families and pilgrims.
• Monsoon (July to August): Slippery trails, leeches, and low visibility. Skip this unless you love rain-soaked solitude.
• Autumn (September to November): Crystal clear views of the snow-capped Himalayan range. My personal favorite time of year.
• Winter (December to February): Heavy snowfall blankets Chopta and Tungnath. The final climb requires guides and gaiters.

Weather Guide

Here is what you can actually expect month by month on the mountain:

How to Reach Chandrashila

Getting to Chopta requires a bit of road travel, as there are no trains or flights directly to the base.

• By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, roughly 220 km away. From the airport, hire a cab or take a bus to Rishikesh, then proceed toward Chopta via Rudraprayag and Ukhimath.
• By Train: The nearest major railway station is Rishikesh or Haridwar. Haridwar is 225 km from Chopta. You can book shared jeos or private cabs directly from the station.
• By Road: Buses and shared cabs ply regularly from Rishikesh and Haridwar to Ukhimath or Kund. From Ukhimath, you'll need to catch a local jeep to Chopta. Driving your own car or hiring a private taxi is by far the most convenient option.

Getting Around

Once you arrive in Chopta, everything is on foot. The base camp area consists of a small cluster of dhabas and campsites stretching along the Gopeshwar-Ukhimath road.

• Walking: The trek starts right from the Chopta roadhead. You do not need vehicles on the trail.
• Local Cabs: If you need to travel from Chopta back down to Ukhimath or Oimtoli for medical supplies or repairs, local Maruti Eecos and Boleros operate on call. Expect to pay around ₹1,500 to ₹2,000 for a dedicated drop.

Top Things to Do

• Pay Respects at Tungnath Temple: Sit on the stone steps of the third Kedar. Built over a thousand years ago, the energy here is palpable.
• Catch the Sunrise at Chandrashila Peak: Start your summit push by 4:30 AM from Tungnath to catch the sun breaking over the Greater Himalayas.
• Camp Under the Stars in Chopta: Pitch your tent in the open alpine meadows. The lack of light pollution makes stargazing phenomenal.
• Spot Himalayan Birds: Keep your binoculars ready for the Himalayan Monal—Uttarakhand’s colorful state bird—often spotted grazing in the meadows.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Want to escape the Instagram crowds at Tungnath? Take these detours:

• Deoria Tal: A pristine high-altitude lake located near Mastura village. It offers a stunning reflection of Chaukhamba peak in its waters and serves as an alternative starting point for a longer trek to Chopta.
• Rohini Bugyal: A gorgeous meadow located on the Deoria Tal to Chopta trail that most casual tourists completely skip.

Accommodation Guide

Accommodation ranges from basic homestays to Swiss tents.

• Camping in Chopta: Several local operators offer waterproof dome tents with sleeping bags. Rates range from ₹1,000 to ₹2,500 per night including meals.
• GMVN Tourist Rest House: Located right in Chopta, offering clean basic rooms. Advance booking is recommended.
• Homestays in Sari Village: Perfect if you are doing the Deoria Tal route first. Run by local families serving home-cooked Garhwali food.

Where to Eat (local food guide)

Do not expect fancy menus on the mountain. Food is simple, hot, and vegetarian.

• Chopta Dhabas: Try the piping hot Aloo Parathas and Maggi paired with ginger tea at Sharma Ji's Dhaba.
• Local Delicacies: Ask for Mandua ki Roti (finger millet flatbread) with Gahat Dal at local homestays in Ukhimath.

Budget Breakdown (dengan INR tables)

Here is a realistic estimate for a 3-day weekend trip from Rishikesh for one person.

Packing Checklist

Don't let the mountain catch you unprepared. Pack light, pack right.

• Footwear: Sturdy trekking shoes with good ankle support. Break them in before you arrive.
• Clothing: Thermal innerwear, fleece jacket, windproof outer shell jacket, and moisture-wicking tees.
• Gear: Trekking poles (lifesavers for your knees on the descent), a 30L daypack, and a reusable water bottle.
• First Aid: Band-aids, painkillers, altitude sickness meds (Diamox after consulting a doctor), andORS packets.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Skipping hydration. At high altitude, you lose moisture faster through breathing. Drink at least 3 liters of water a day.

• Watch for AMS: Acute Mountain Sickness can strike anyone. If you feel dizzy or nauseous, stop climbing and descend immediately.
• Leave No Trace: Carry your plastic wrappers and bottles back down. Do not litter the pristine alpine meadows.

Nearby Attractions

• Ukhimath: The winter seat of Lord Kedarnath, filled with ancient temples.
• Karthik Swami Temple: Located nearby, famous for its 360-degree mountain views and hundreds of steps.
