Delhi to Mussoorie Weekend Trip: Route, Budget & Itinerary

Introduction

I've driven up from Delhi to Mussoorie more times than I can count. Every single time, the chaotic rush of the plains fades the moment I cross the toll at Dehradun and hit the winding mountain roads. If you're craving crisp mountain air, momos on Mall Road, and sweeping views of the Doon Valley, a weekend trip is your best bet.

Planning this run isn't as simple as punching it into Google Maps and heading out on Friday evening. You've got to dodge traffic out of Delhi, time your climb past Dehradun just right, and know where to park without getting fleeced. Let's break down the exact route, realistic budgets, and an itinerary that actually works.

Quick Facts About Delhi to Mussoorie Trip

• Distance: Approximately 290 km via NH 334.

Best Time to Visit

Mussoorie stays popular year-round, but your experience depends entirely on the month you pick. Summers are packed with families escaping the heat of the plains. Monsoons bring dramatic valley mists and empty trails, though landslides can occasionally disrupt plans.

Pro Tip: If you want to see snowfall, aim for late December to January. Book your hotels at least two months in advance.

Weather Guide

How to Reach Mussoorie from Delhi

By Road (Self-Drive or Cab)

The classic route takes you out of Delhi via NH 334 through Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Roorkee, and into Dehradun before climbing the final 35 km to Mussoorie. The Meerut Expressway has cut down travel times significantly, but you still need to beat the Delhi morning rush.

By Bus

UPSRTC and Uttarakhand Transport buses run overnight from ISBT Kashmiri Gate to Dehradun. From Dehradun ISBT, you can grab a shared taxi or state bus for the final 1.5-hour climb to Mussoorie.

By Train

Take the overnight Mussoorie Express (14041) from Old Delhi to Dehradun, arriving early morning. Grab a prepaid taxi right outside the Dehradun railway station.

Getting Around

Once you're in Mussoorie, forget driving your own car on Mall Road. Vehicles are restricted there during peak hours. Walking is your best option, supplemented by local auto-rickshaws and battery-operated carts. For Kempty Falls or Landour, hire a local taxi union cab from Library Chowk.

Top Things to Do

Stroll Down Mall Road

Start your trip with an evening walk from Picture Palace to Library Chowk. Grab a hot cup of tea, browse old bookstores like Cambridge Book Depot, and watch the valley lights flicker on.

Visit Camel's Back Road

This 3-kilometer stretch gets its name from a rock formation shaped like a camel's hump. It's peaceful, closed to heavy traffic, and offers stunning sunset views over the distant Himalayas.

Explore Landour

Skip the main town bustle and head 4 km higher to Landour. Visit the historic St. Paul's Church, grab a bakery item at Landour Bakehouse, and walk past Ruskin Bond's favorite haunts.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Cloud's End

Located about 6 km past Hathipaark, this is the geographical end of Mussoorie. It features a heritage British bungalow surrounded by thick oak and deodar forests with zero commercial chaos.

Jabarkhet Nature Reserve

India's first privately owned forest reserve is a haven for trekkers. Hire a local guide at the entrance for INR 350 to spot rare birds, flora, and panoramic valley views.

Accommodation Guide

Where you stay defines your trip. If you want nightlife and shopping, stay near Library Chowk. If you want quiet walks and old-world charm, book a cottage in Landour.

• Budget: Zostel Mussoorie or local guesthouses near Picture Palace.
• Mid-Range: Hotel Savoy heritage rooms or Sterling Mussoorie.
• Luxury: The Claridges Nabha Residence or Welcomhotel The Savoy.

Where to Eat

Mussoorie has a fantastic food scene that goes beyond standard hotel buffets.

• Landour Bakehouse: Try their cinnamon rolls and hot chocolate.
• Little Llama Cafe: Excellent pizzas, burgers, and the best valley view from their rooftop seating.
• Lovely Omelette Centre: Located on Mall Road; expect a queue, but the cheese-butter omelette is legendary.
• Kalsang Friends Corner: Authentic Tibetan and Chinese food right near Library Chowk.

Budget Breakdown (with INR tables)

Here is what a realistic 3-day weekend trip for two people costs.

Packing Checklist

• Comfortable walking shoes (you will walk a lot on inclines).
• Layered clothing (temperatures drop quickly after sunset).
• Reusable water bottle.
• Basic motion sickness pills for the winding mountain drive.
• Valid ID proofs for hotel check-ins.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Trying to drive all the way onto Mall Road during peak hours. You will get stuck and face hefty fines.

• Keep your fuel tank topped up before entering Dehradun; petrol bunks thin out on the hill climb.
• Don't feed the monkeys near Picture Palace; they are aggressive and quick to snatch bags.
• Carry cash as network connectivity can be spotty in certain pockets of Landour and Cloud's End.
