Introduction
Planning a trip to Uttarakhand can get overwhelming fast. You look at flight schedules, check train availability for Dehradun or Kathgodam, and suddenly you are trying to guess how much cash you will actually burn on transport, food, and stays. I have spent years driving through the winding mountain roads of Garhwal and Kumaon, eating piping hot maggi at 3,000 meters, and testing out local homestays.
Whether you are backpacking on a shoestring budget through Rishikesh or planning a cozy family vacation in Nainital, I am going to break down every single rupee you will spend. No fluff, just hard numbers and insider tips.

Uttarakhand changes character completely depending on when you show up. If you are chasing snow, you will want January. If you want to trek the high meadows, aim for September after the monsoon clears the air.
Pro Tip: Avoid traveling during peak monsoon (July to August) unless you enjoy sudden landslides blocking your route for hours.

How to Reach Uttarakhand
Getting into the state depends on your starting point. Most travelers head first to Dehradun (for Garhwal) or Kathgodam/Haldwani (for Kumaon).
- By Air: Jolly Grant Airport (DED) in Dehradun handles domestic flights from Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. Taxis from DED to Rishikesh cost roughly ₹1,200 to ₹1,500.
- By Train: Dehradun Express and Nanda Devi Express connect Delhi directly to Dehradun and Haridwar. A sleeper ticket costs around ₹300–₹500, while 3AC runs ₹1,000–₹1,400.
- By Road: Volvo buses run overnight from Delhi’s ISBT Kashmiri Gate to Dehradun, Haldwani, and Rishikesh. Tickets range from ₹600 to ₹1,200.
Getting Around
Navigating mountain terrain requires patience. Shared jeeps (Sumos) are the backbone of local transit. A seat from Rishikesh to Joshimath runs about ₹600 to ₹800. Private cab rentals for a full day (e.g., Dzire or Ertiga) cost between ₹3,000 and ₹4,500 depending on fuel prices and terrain difficulty.
Top Things to Do
- River Rafting in Rishikesh: Tackle Grade III rapids on the Ganga. Costs about ₹1,000 to ₹2,500 per person depending on the stretch (16 km or 24 km).
- Trekking to Tungnath and Chandrashila: The highest Shiva temple in the world. Trail starts from Chopta; parking fee is ₹50.
- Wildlife Safari in Jim Corbett National Park: Jeep safaris in zones like Dhikala or Bijrani cost ₹5,000 to ₹7,000 per jeep (up to 6 people) plus entry permits.
- Boating on Naini Lake: Classic tourist activity in Nainital, costing around ₹210 to ₹500 for a rowboat.
Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path
Skip overcrowded Mussoorie and head to Kanatal or Binsar. Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary offers stunning zero-light pollution night skies and costs ₹150 entry per person. Munsiyari in the Pithoragarh district gives you unobstructed views of the Panchachuli peaks without the massive tourist buses.
Accommodation Guide
Where you stay dictates a massive chunk of your overall Uttarakhand trip cost. Hostels have exploded in popularity in places like Rishikesh, Bhimtal, and Mukteshwar.
- Hostels (e.g., Zostel, goSTOPS): ₹500 – ₹900 per bed per night in a dorm.
- Budget Hotels / Homestays: ₹1,500 – ₹3,000 per night for a double room with mountain views.
- Luxury Resorts (e.g., JW Marriott Mussoorie, Taj Corbett): ₹12,000 – ₹25,000+ per night.
Where to Eat (Local Food Guide)
Don't leave without trying Kafuli (spinach and fenugreek curry) and Bhang ki Chutney.
- Paryag Café (Rishikesh): Excellent wood-fired pizza and coffee for around ₹400 per person.
- Chotiwala (Rishikesh): Legendary spot for thalis costing ₹300 to ₹500.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes
Common Mistake: Booking stays in isolated areas without checking mobile network connectivity. BSNL and Jio work best in remote upper regions, while Airtel can drop out completely past Devprayag.
- Always carry physical cash. UPI fails frequently in mountain pockets due to erratic fiber optic lines.
- Keep your vehicle's coolant and brake pads checked before driving up steep gradients like the route to Auli.
Nearby Attractions
If you have extra days, consider hopping across state lines or exploring deeper valleys. Haridwar and Rishikesh pair naturally with a mountain trip. If you are in Kumaon, a quick drive into Ranikhet or Kausani adds immense value to your itinerary.
