How to Reach Kedarnath from Mumbai: Train, Flight & Road Options

Introduction

Embarking on the journey from the coastal chaos of Mumbai to the high-altitude serenity of Kedarnath is nothing short of a life-changing pilgrimage. Covering roughly 1,700 kilometers across India requires solid planning, especially when you are transitioning from sea level straight into the Garhwal Himalayas at 3,583 meters. I've personally made this trek multiple times, testing out different transit combos so you don't have to.

Whether you're looking for the fastest flight-plus-cab route or a budget-friendly train journey that cuts through the heart of the country, this guide breaks down every single detail. Let's dive right into how you can make this spiritual expedition seamless.

Quick Facts About How to Reach Kedarnath from Mumbai

• Total Distance: Approx. 1,700 km by road / 1,400 km air + road.
• Primary Transit Hubs: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) / Bandra Terminus (Mumbai) to Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun) or Haridwar/Rishikesh Railway Station.
• Base Camp for Trek: Gaurikund.
• Trek Length: 16 to 18 km one way from Gaurikund to Kedarnath Temple.
• Mandatory Requirement: Biometric/Offline registration via the Uttarakhand Tourism website.

Pro Tip: Never start your trek from Gaurikund later than 10:00 AM. The weather in the upper Himalayas turns unpredictably fast after noon.

Best Time to Visit

The Kedarnath temple opens strictly on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya (usually late April or early May) and closes on Bhai Dooj (late October or early November). Avoid the peak monsoon months of July and August due to high risks of landslides along the Sonprayag-Gaurikund axis.

How to Reach How to Reach Kedarnath from Mumbai

Option 1: By Flight (Fastest)

Catch a direct or single-stop flight from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) to Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun (DED). Airlines like IndiGo and Air India operate regular flights, taking roughly 4 to 6 hours. From Dehradun airport, hire a pre-paid taxi or take a shared cab to Rishikesh, then proceed toward Rudraprayag and Sonprayag.

Option 2: By Train (Budget-Friendly)

Board a direct train from Mumbai to Haridwar or Delhi. Popular options include the August Kranti Rajdhani to Delhi followed by a connecting train/bus, or direct trains like the Dehradun Express (19019) from Bandra Terminus. The train journey takes about 28 to 34 hours. Once you reach Haridwar or Rishikesh, board state transport buses or private cabs to Sonprayag.

Option 3: By Road (Road Trip)

Driving all the way from Mumbai is a massive undertaking. You will take the NH 52 and NH 48 corridor passing through Indore, Gwalior, Agra, and Delhi before entering Uttarakhand. Most travelers prefer flying or taking the train to Delhi, and then renting a self-drive SUV or hiring a driver for the mountain stretch.

Getting Around

Once you reach Sonprayag (the final motorable point for private vehicles), you must take a local shared jeep to Gaurikund (5 km). From Gaurikund, your only options are trekking on foot, hiring a pony (pithu), renting a dandi (palanquin), or taking a helicopter ride from Phata, Sersi, or Guptkashi helipads.

Common Mistake: Many travelers assume they can drive their personal cars all the way to Gaurikund and park easily. Parking is extremely limited at Sonprayag; you must park in designated multi-level parking zones and use shuttle jeeps.
