Mumbai to Uttarakhand Trip: Complete Itinerary, Cost & Travel Guide

Introduction

Swapping the Arabian Sea for the snow-capped peaks of the Garhwal and Kumaon Himalayas is a rite of passage for many Mumbaikars. After living through sticky Mumbai monsoons or sweltering April afternoons, the pine-scented breeze of Uttarakhand feels entirely unreal. But pulling off this journey smoothly takes planning.

Distance is your first hurdle. You are looking at a 1,400+ kilometer leap from the coast to North India. Over the last decade of leading Himalayan expeditions, I have seen travelers burn cash on terrible flight connections or lose days stuck in transit. This guide cuts through the noise. I will show you how to get there efficiently, where to stay without blowing your savings, and how to structure a 10-day itinerary that actually works.

Quick Facts About Uttarakhand

Before booking your tickets, let us look at the numbers that matter for your planning:

• Capital: Dehradun (Winter) / Bhararisain (Summer)
• Major Airports: Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun - DED), Pantnagar Airport (PGH - Kumaon region)
• Major Railheads: Dehradun, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Kathgodam, Ramnagar
• Highest Peak: Nanda Devi (7,816 meters)
• Official Languages: Hindi, Garhwali, Kumaoni
• Time Zone: IST (UTC+5:30)

Best Time to Visit

Uttarakhand changes character completely depending on when you land. If you want high-altitude treks like Valley of Flowers or Kedartal, you must travel between May and June, or post-monsoon from September to October. Winters (December to February) bring heavy snow to places like Auli and Mussoorie, making it ideal for skiing and cozy mountain stays.

Pro Tip: Avoid July and August entirely unless you enjoy roadblocks. Monsoon landslides on routes like Rishikesh to Joshimath can strand you for days.

Weather Guide

Here is what you can expect across Uttarakhand month-by-month at mid-altitudes (around 2,000 meters like Nainital or Mussoorie):

How to Reach Uttarakhand from Mumbai

Getting from Mumbai (BOM) to Uttarakhand requires a combination of air, rail, and road travel. You cannot fly direct to the mountains, so Delhi or Dehradun acts as your primary transit hub.

By Air

The smartest route is booking a direct flight from Mumbai (BOM) to Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport (DED). Airlines like IndiGo and Air India operate daily direct flights taking roughly 2 hours and 15 minutes. From DED, you can hire a private cab or take a shared taxi into the mountains.

By Train

If you prefer trains, take the BDTS HW Express (19019) or Golden Temple Mail (12903) from Mumbai to Delhi or direct to Haridwar/Dehradun. The train journey from Mumbai to Haridwar takes about 28 to 32 hours. It is long, but it saves flight costs and lets you ease into the changing geography.

Getting Around

Once you cross into Uttarakhand, your transport options depend entirely on your itinerary. Local buses (run by UTC) connect major towns like Dehradun, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Haldwani, and Nainital very cheaply.

For upper Himalayan regions like Chopta, Auli, or Munsiyari, shared jeeps (Maxx or Sumo) are the lifeline. If you want comfort and flexibility, renting a self-drive car from Dehradun or hiring a dedicated cab with a local mountain driver is your best bet. Local drivers know every blind curve and pothole, which is worth every rupee.

Top Things to Do

• River Rafting in Rishikesh: Tackle Class III and IV rapids like 'Marine Drive' and 'The Wall' on the Ganga.
• Skiing in Auli: Hit the slopes managed by GMVN with panoramic views of Nanda Devi.
• Wildlife Safari in Jim Corbett: Track wild Bengal tigers in the Dhikala or Bijrani zones.
• Spiritual Ghats in Haridwar: Witness the mesmerizing Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri.
• Trek to Tungnath: Hike to the highest Shiva temple in the world via Chopta.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Skip the crowded Mall Roads of Mussoorie and Nainital. Instead, head to Kanatal for quiet pine forests and stellar Himalayan views. If you are exploring Kumaon, visit Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary and stay at the KMVN TRH Binsar inside the forest core zone for unobstructed sunrise views over Trishul and Nanda Devi peaks.

Another absolute gem is Sari Village, the base camp for Deoria Tal trek. Waking up to the reflection of Chaukhamba peaks in a high-altitude lake while sipping local Darjeeling tea is something you will never forget.

Accommodation Guide

Uttarakhand offers everything from luxury heritage properties to backpacker hostels and rustic homewares.

• Hostels: Zostel (Rishikesh, Mukteshwar, Mussoorie) is great for solo travelers and digital nomads.
• Mid-Range: Sterling Resorts, Lemon Tree, and local boutique cottages.
• Luxury & Heritage: The Claridges Nadesar Palace equivalents like Ananda in the Himalayas (Tehri Garhwal) or Glasshouse on the Ganges (Rishikesh).

Where to Eat

Mountain food in Uttarakhand is hearty, organic, and designed to keep you warm. Look out for these local delicacies:

• Kachmauli: Stuffed mutton cooked with local spices.
• Bhatt ki Dal: A rich, black soybean soup packed with protein.
• Mandua ki Roti: Finger millet flatbread, fantastic with white butter and jaggery.
• Aloo ke Gutke: Spiced boiled potatoes tossed in mustard oil and fresh herbs.

Top Spots: Try Chotiwala in Rishikesh for traditional thalis, and Café de Ristorante in Nainital for wood-fired pizzas with a view.

Budget Breakdown (with INR tables)

Here is a realistic cost estimate for a 7-day Mumbai to Uttarakhand trip per person (excluding major flights from Mumbai):

Packing Checklist

Packing for Uttarakhand requires layers because temperatures fluctuate drastically between sun and shade.

• Clothing: Thermal innerwear, fleece jacket, windproof/waterproof outer shell, sturdy trekking boots.
• Gear: Daypack (20L-30L), UV protection sunglasses, reusable water bottle.
• First Aid: Motion sickness pills (for winding mountain roads), altitude sickness medication (Diamox - consult doctor), band-aids, ORS packets.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Packing your itinerary too tight. Mountain distances look short on Google Maps, but winding roads mean average speeds rarely exceed 40 km/h. Always add 2 hours to your estimated travel time.

Pro Tip: Download offline maps (Maps.me or Google Maps offline) before leaving Dehradun. Mobile networks like Jio and Airtel work well in major towns, but remote valleys like Chopta or Harzil have patchy connectivity.

Nearby Attractions

If you have extra days, consider extending your trip across the border into Himachal Pradesh (Shimla/Kullu via Chakrata) or exploring the borderlands near Pithoragarh in Kumaon (known as Little Kashmir).
