Introduction
Most people think you need deep pockets for a proper Himalayan escape, but Rishikesh is proof you can have an unforgettable weekend without breaking the bank. I've spent weeks testing hostels, hunting down street food stalls, and timing local buses so you don't have to waste a single minute.
This 2-day budget itinerary is built for travelers who want adventure, spirituality, and good food for under ₹3,500 total. Let's dive right in.
Quick Facts About Rishikesh
- Location: Dehradun and Tehri Garhwal districts, Uttarakhand, India
- Elevation: 372 meters (1,220 feet) above sea level
- Famous For: Yoga, white-water rafting, Beatles Ashram, Ganga Aarti
- Alcohol & Non-Veg Rule: Alcohol and non-vegetarian food are strictly banned within municipal limits near the ghats.
- Currency: Indian Rupee (INR)
Best Time to Visit
Timing makes or breaks a short trip. If you come during peak monsoon, river rafting shuts down entirely. If you visit in May, you'll melt in the 42°C heat.
Pro Tip: Visit between October and November right after the monsoon clears. The Ganges is a striking emerald green, and the air is crisp.
Weather Guide (Month-by-Month)
How to Reach Rishikesh
Getting here from Delhi is straightforward and cheap if you avoid private cabs.
- By Bus: Take an overnight Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (UTC) bus from Kashmere Gate ISBT in Delhi to Rishikesh Bus Station. Cost is around ₹450–₹600, taking roughly 6 to 7 hours.
- By Train: Book a ticket on the Yoga Express (14887) or travel to Haridwar Junction (trains are more frequent), then take a shared auto to Rishikesh for ₹50.
- By Air: Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is 20 km away. A shared taxi from the airport costs about ₹400.
Getting Around
Forget renting expensive private scooters if you're on a tight budget. Walking is your best tool since Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula areas are heavily pedestrianized.
- Shared Autos: Run fixed routes between Rishikesh Railway Station and Triveni Ghat / Ram Jhula for ₹15 to ₹20 per person.
- Walking: Crossing the footbridges gives you the best views and costs ₹0.
- E-Rickshaws: Great for short hops within Tapovan, costing ₹10 to ₹30.
