Which Place in Uttarakhand Gets the Most Snowfall? The Definitive 2026 Guide

Introduction

If you are searching for the absolute answer to which place in Uttarakhand gets the most snowfall, the crown officially goes to Auli, closely rivaled by high-altitude pockets like Munsiyari, Harsil, and the upper ridges of Chopta. While popular hill stations like Mussoorie and Nainital only catch a fleeting dusting every few years, the higher reaches of the Garhwal and Kumaon Himalayas transform into legitimate alpine wonderlands between December and February.

I have spent the last decade tracking winter weather patterns across the Indian Himalayas. I have shoveled my car out of sudden drifts in Joshimath and shivered through sub-zero nights in remote Kumaon homestays. In this guide, I will cut through the generic travel blog fluff to give you the exact spots, real costs, and logistical realities of chasing deep snow in Uttarakhand.

Quick Facts About Uttarakhand Snowfall

• Top Contender: Auli (highest accumulation and best ski infrastructure)
• Best Runner-Up for Deep Snow: Munsiyari and Khaliya Top
• Peak Snow Window: Late December to mid-February
• Maximum Recorded Winter Depths: 3 to 5 feet in upper Auli and Mana village
• Average Winter Temperatures: -5°C to 8°C in the snow zones

Pro Tip: Don't rely solely on weather apps for mountain forecasts. They often show Joshimath weather instead of Auli, which sits 1,000 meters higher and gets entirely different weather patterns.

Best Time to Visit

Timing is everything when you are chasing snow. If you arrive too early in December, you might just find frosty grass and dry cold. If you arrive by late March, the snow is melting into slush.

• Late December: Fresh snow starts blanketing the upper slopes. Christmas and New Year bring heavy tourist rushes to Auli.
• January: This is the prime month. Snowfall is most consistent, temperatures drop significantly, and ski slopes are fully functional.
• February: Excellent for photography and clear blue skies, though fresh snowfalls become slightly more spaced out.

Weather Guide (Month-by-Month)

How to Reach Auli and Munsiyari

Getting to Uttarakhand's snow capitals requires patience. The closest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, located roughly 270 km from Auli and 315 km from Munsiyari.

If you are heading to Auli, you will fly or take a train to Dehradun or Haridwar, hire a cab to Joshimath (approx. ₹4,500 to ₹6,000 for a private hatchback), and then take the famous 4 km long ropeway or drive up the winding mountain road.

If you are heading to Munsiyari in Kumaon, the journey starts from Kathgodam railway station. You will take a shared jeep or private cab via Almora and Thal, a scenic 7-to-8-hour drive covering 200 km of winding mountain tarmac.

Getting Around

Once you reach the base towns like Joshimath or Munsiyari, public transport becomes scarce during heavy snowfalls.

• Walking: Essential for short distances within Auli or local village trails.
• 4x4 Jeeps: Mandatory for traversing unplowed roads between Joshimath and Auli when black ice forms.
• Cable Cars & Chair Lifts: Auli features a state-of-the-art ropeway connecting Joshimath to Auli (costs roughly ₹1,000 per person round trip) and a chair lift for skiers (approx. ₹500 per day pass).

Top Things to Do

• Skiing in Auli: Auli boasts Asia's best ski slopes certified by international bodies. You can rent equipment right at the base for around ₹500 to ₹1,000 per day.
• Trek to Khaliya Top (Munsiyari): A stunning 6 km snow trek that rewards you with 360-degree views of the Panchachuli peaks.
• Ropeway Ride: Take the Joshimath-Auli cable car for a bird's-eye view of snow-draped oak and conifer forests.
• Stargazing: High altitude mountain hamlets offer zero light pollution, making winter nights incredible for astrophotography.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Skip the crowded main tourist complexes and head to these lesser-known snow pockets:

• Chipla Kedar (Kumaon): A remote ridge hike that gets buried under massive snowdrifts, ideal for serious trekkers.
• Nelang Valley (Garhward): Often called Uttarakhand's Ladakh, it sees stark, cold, high-altitude snowfall, though special inner-line permits from the district magistrate are required.
• Pandukeshwar: Located just before Badrinath on the Joshimath route, this village gets plenty of snow with a fraction of Auli's tourist crowds.

Accommodation Guide

For mid-range stays in Auli, The Clifford Resort and GMVN Ski Resort offer great warmth and views. In Munsiyari, local homestays like Milam Inn provide authentic hospitality and wood-fired heating.

Where to Eat (Local Food Guide)

Mountain food in winter needs to be calorie-dense and comforting. Seek out these local dishes:

• Kafuli: A thick, rich green gravy made from spinach and fenugreek leaves.
• Mandua ki Roti: Finger millet flatbreads that generate internal body heat, perfect for freezing days.
• Chainsoo: A spicy, roasted black gram dal preparation.

Stop by Himalayan Cafe in Joshimath for hot ginger lemon tea and momos, or warm up with local pahadi thalis at roadside dhabas.

Budget Breakdown

A 4-day winter trip from Dehradun to Auli for two people typically costs:

• Transport (Cabs & Cable Cars): ₹7,000
• Accommodation (3 nights mid-range): ₹10,500
• Food & Dhabas: ₹3,500
• Gear Rental & Ski Passes: ₹3,000
• Total Estimated Cost: ₹24,000 (approx. $290 USD)

Packing Checklist

Common Mistake: Packing regular denim jeans and fashion sneakers. Denim freezes, gets wet easily, and traps cold moisture against your skin.

• Base Layers: Thermal tops and bottoms (merino wool or synthetic fleece).
• Outerwear: Waterproof, windproof mountain jacket with a hood.
• Footwear: High-ankle waterproof trekking boots with deep tread, plus 3 pairs of wool socks.
• Accessories: UV-protection sunglasses (snow blindness is real), UV-blocking sunscreen, and woolen beanies.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

• Altitude Sickness (AMS): Auli sits at nearly 2,800 meters, and spots like Khaliya Top exceed 3,500 meters. Hydrate constantly and ascend gradually.
• Driving on Black Ice: Never attempt to drive up mountain passes after sunset in January without snow chains on your tires.
• Hydration: Cold weather tricks your body into forgetting to drink water. Carry a thermos with warm water at all times.

Nearby Attractions

• Joshimath Temple & Shankaracharya Math: Historic spiritual sites right at the base of the Auli ropeway.
• Bhimghat / Nanda Devi National Park: Spectacular proximity to India's second-highest peak.
• Birthi Falls (near Munsiyari): A frozen waterfall spectacle located along the main driving route.
