Camping in Rishikesh: Best Locations, Cost & What to Expect

Introduction

I still remember my first night sleeping in a canvas tent right by the Ganges in Rishikesh. The sound of roaring rapids drowned out my thoughts, and the mountain air tasted crisp. Over the last decade, I've watched Rishikesh evolve from a backpacker secret into India's capital for outdoor adventure. But with hundreds of operators popping up along the riverbanks, finding the right spot isn't as straightforward as it used to be.

Whether you're hunting for a luxury glamping setup with attached bathrooms or a rugged riverside site where you can build a campfire, I've tested the waters—literally. This guide breaks down everything you need to know about camping in Rishikesh, from exact pricing in INR to local spots most tourists completely miss.

Quick Facts About Camping in Rishikesh

• Primary Hubs: Shivpuri, Brahmpuri, Marine Drive, and Mohan Chatti.
• Average Cost: ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 per night per person (including meals).
• Peak Season: October to March.
• Monsoon Ban: Most riverfront camps close from July to September due to rising water levels.
• Main Activities: White-water rafting, cliff jumping, bonfires, and stargazing.

Best Time to Visit

The absolute best time for camping in Rishikesh is between October and March. The monsoon rains have cleared up, leaving behind lush green hills and daytime temperatures hovering around 20°C to 25°C. Nights can get genuinely cold, dropping to 5°C in December and January, so you'll want a camp that provides heavy blankets or bonfires.

Avoid the peak summer months of May and June if you hate the heat; temperatures regularly cross 40°C during the day. However, if you want massive discounts on camping packages and don't mind sweating, summer is your best bet for budget travel.

Weather Guide

Pro Tip: Book your New Year's Eve camping slot by October. The best riverside properties sell out months in advance and jack up prices by 100%.

How to Reach Rishikesh

Getting to your campsite is surprisingly easy, regardless of whether you're coming from Delhi or Dehradun.

• By Air: The nearest airport is Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport (DED), located about 20 km from Rishikesh. From the airport, you can take a prepaid taxi (₹800 - ₹1,200) directly to your camp in Shivpuri.
• By Train: Yoga Nagari Rishikesh (YNRK) is the main railway station, though Haridwar Junction (25 km away) has better connectivity to major Indian cities. Shared auto-rickshaws and buses run frequently between Haridwar and Rishikesh.
• By Road: Overnight Volvo and luxury buses run daily from Delhi's Kashmere Gate ISBT to Rishikesh. The journey takes around 6 to 7 hours and costs between ₹500 and ₹1,200 depending on the bus type.

Getting Around

Once you arrive in Rishikesh, getting to your camp depends entirely on where it's located. Camps in Shivpuri and Marine Drive sit 15 to 30 km upstream from Laxman Jhula along Badrinath Highway.

• Shared Jeeps & Autos: Regular tempos and jeeps ply from Rishikesh main market toward Shivpuri for about ₹50–₹80 per seat.
• Scooty Rentals: You can rent a Honda Activa in Tapovan for around ₹400–₹600 a day. This is the best way to explore if your camp is easily accessible by road.
• Campsite Pickups: Most mid-range and luxury camps include pick-up and drop-off services from the Rishikesh bus stand if you book an inclusive package.

Top Things to Do

Camping isn't just about sleeping in a tent; it's the gateway to Uttarakhand's adventure playground.

• White-Water Rafting: You can't camp in Rishikesh without hitting the rapids. Choose between the 16 km stretch from Shivpuri to Nim Beach or the hardcore 24 km stretch from Marine Drive.
• Cliff Jumping & Body Surfing: Included in almost every rafting trip, leaping off a 20-foot rock into the freezing Ganges is a rite of passage.
• Evening Bonfires: Most campsites light a communal fire around 7 PM, accompanied by light music and snacks.
• Attend the Ganga Aarti: Head down to Triveni Ghat or Parmarth Niketan in the evening to witness the mesmerizing ritual of floating oil lamps.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

If standard commercial campsites feel too crowded, head away from the main highway toward Mohan Chatti or the foothills near Patna Waterfall.

• Neelkanth Forest Camps: Located higher up in the mountains away from the river bank, these sites offer incredible valley views and absolute silence.
• Marine Drive Secluded Pockets: While Shivpuri gets packed, walking 1 km further downstream near Marine Drive reveals tiny, lesser-known beach campsites run by local families.

Accommodation Guide

Not all camps are created equal. Knowing the tier of camping you're booking saves you from nasty surprises upon arrival.

• Budget Camps (₹1,000 - ₹1,800/night): Swiss-style canvas tents, common shared washrooms (often distant from the tents), basic buffet meals, and shared bonfires.
• Mid-Range Camps (₹2,000 - ₹3,500/night): Better quality tents, attached Western-style toilets, electricity inside tents, better meal spreads, and organized adventure games like volleyball.
• Luxury Glamping (₹4,000 - ₹8,000+/night): Weatherproof geodesic domes or luxury cottages, plush bedding, private sit-outs, attached running hot water bathrooms, Wi-Fi, and gourmet multi-cuisine dining.

Where to Eat (Local Food Guide)

While your campsite usually includes breakfast and dinner (buffet style), you'll definitely want to explore Rishikesh's café culture during the day.

• Freedom Café (Tapovan): Perched right over the Ganges, famous for wood-fired pizzas and banana pancakes.
• Pyramid Cafe (Tapovan): A quiet, treehouse-style spot with incredible views and great herbal teas.
• Chotiwala (Swarg Ashram): The classic, legendary spot for a traditional North Indian thali, identifiable by the live man dressed up as Chotiwala at the entrance.

Budget Breakdown (with INR tables)

Here is what a standard 2-night, 3-day weekend camping and rafting trip looks like for one person:

Packing Checklist

Packing smart makes or breaks your wilderness experience. Don't leave home without:

• Warm Fleece / Jacket: Even in summer, river breeze at night drops temperatures quickly.
• Quick-Dry Clothes: Essential for rafting days.
• Sturdy Footwear: Water sandals (Teva/Crocs) for the river and sneakers for walking.
• Power Bank: Many budget camps turn off generator power late at night.
• Personal Medical Kit: Basic painkillers, band-aids, and motion sickness tablets.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Booking ultra-cheap ₹600 camps found on shady roadside stalls. These often lack proper toilet sanitation, have no security for solo travelers, and are located too close to the flood line.

• Alcohol Restrictions: Uttarakhand forest departments and camp owners strictly ban outside alcohol on riverfront properties. Check individual camp policies.
• Follow Rafting Instructors: Never take off your life jacket during a rafting trip, even after clearing the rapids.
• Stay Within Marked Zones: Do not attempt to swim alone in the Ganges at night; the undercurrents are notoriously deceptive.

Nearby Attractions

• Beatles Ashram (Chaurasi Kutia): Explore the graffiti-covered meditation domes where the legendary band stayed in 1968.
• Patna Waterfall: A short, refreshing jungle trek leading to a hidden multi-tiered waterfall.
• Kunjapuri Devi Temple: Located 25 km uphill, this is the prime spot to catch a breathtaking sunrise over the Greater Himalayas.
