Introduction
I’ve driven up to Auli more times than I can count. Every single time, as the highway trades urban concrete for the roaring Alaknanda River, I feel that familiar rush. Auli isn't just a ski resort slapped onto an Indian hill station; it’s a sweeping Himalayan amphitheater where Nanda Devi stands guard right in front of your window.
Planning a Delhi to Auli trip takes a bit more logistical grit than a weekend trip to Shimla or Manali. You’re looking at roughly 500 kilometers of shifting terrain, mountain switchbacks, and weather that can turn on a dime.
Whether you're driving your own car, booking a cab, or piecing together state buses, I’ve laid out everything you need below. Let’s skip the generic travel brochure fluff and get straight into the details.
Quick Facts About Delhi to Auli
Before you hit book on that hotel or pack your heavy woolens, let’s look at the hard data for a Delhi to Auli journey:
- Total Distance: 500 km via NH 334 and NH 7.
- Driving Time: 13 to 15 hours depending on traffic and hill-climbing pace.
- Starting Elevation (Delhi): 216 meters (708 ft).
- Ending Elevation (Auli): 2,500 to 3,050 meters (8,200 to 10,000 ft).
- Best Route: Delhi -> Meerut -> Muzaffarnagar -> Roorkee -> Haridwar -> Rishikesh -> Devprayag -> Rudraprayag -> Karnaprayag -> Chamoli -> Joshimath -> Auli.
Best Time to Visit
When you visit Auli completely changes what you'll experience. Most travelers head up here for the legendary snow sports in winter, but summer offers an entirely different kind of quiet beauty.
If you want powdery snow and skiing, plan your trip between January and February. If you prefer lush green alpine meadows, clear views of the peaks, and comfortable daytime temperatures, May to June is your sweet spot.
Pro Tip: Avoid traveling during peak monsoon (July and August). Landslides between Rishikesh and Joshimath can strand you for days.
Weather Guide
Here’s a month-by-month breakdown of what to expect on your Delhi to Auli trip:
How to Reach
Getting from Delhi to Auli involves reaching Joshimath first, and then covering the final stretch to Auli via cable car or road.
By Road (Self-Drive or Cab)
This is by far the most flexible option. Take the Delhi-Meerut Expressway out of Delhi to bypass city gridlock. Follow NH 334 through Roorkee to Haridwar, then hit the NH 7 mountain highway all the way to Joshimath.A one-way cab from Delhi to Joshimath/Auli will cost you anywhere between ₹9,000 and ₹14,000 depending on the vehicle type (Dzire vs. Innova Crysta).
By Bus
You can take an overnight Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (UTC) bus or a private Volvo from Delhi’s Kashmiri Gate ISBT to Rishikesh or Haridwar (approx. ₹500–₹1,200). From Rishikesh, catch local shared jeeps or buses heading up to Joshimath early in the morning.By Train & Air
The nearest railway station is Rishikesh (RKSH), about 250 km away. However, Haridwar (HW) has better train connectivity from Delhi. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, roughly 270 km from Auli.Getting Around
Once you arrive in Joshimath, you have two ways to reach Auli:
- Auli Ropeway: One of the highest and longest ropeways in Asia. It runs from Joshimath to Auli (approx. 4 km) and costs around ₹1,000–₹1,500 return per person. Check wind conditions before relying on it.
- Road Transfer: A 16 km winding paved road connects Joshimath to Auli. Local taxi drivers charge ₹800 to ₹1,500 for a drop, depending on snow conditions.
Pro Tip: If heavy snow blocks the road, only 4x4 vehicles with snow chains are allowed past Joshimath.
