How to Plan an Uttarakhand Trip from Mumbai: The Ultimate Guide

Introduction

Swapping the humid local trains of Mumbai for the crisp, pine-scented air of the Garhwal or Kumaon Himalayas is one of the best life upgrades you can make. But planning an Uttarakhand trip from Mumbai can quickly turn into a logistical headache. You are looking at crossing roughly 1,400 to 1,800 kilometers depending on your final hill station, and generic travel blogs rarely tell you how to string together flights, overnight trains, and winding mountain roads efficiently.

I have taken this exact cross-country route half a dozen times. Whether you are chasing the powder snow in Auli, tracking tigers in Jim Corbett, or meditating by the Ganges in Rishikesh, this guide lays out the exact blueprint you need. Let’s skip the fluff and get straight to the logistics.

Quick Facts About Uttarakhand Trip from Mumbai

• Distance from Mumbai to Dehradun: Approximately 1,420 km by air and 1,650 km by road.
• Primary Entry Points: Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun), Haridwar Junction, or New Delhi (if taking connecting trains/flights).
• Ideal Trip Duration: 7 to 10 days minimum to account for travel days.
• Currency: Indian Rupee (INR). Carry physical cash as UPI fails in remote higher-altitude villages.
• Primary Language: Garhwali, Kumaoni, Hindi, and English in tourist hubs.

Pro Tip: Do not attempt to cover both Kumaon (Nainital, Almora) and Garhwal (Rishikesh, Mussoorie, Badrinath) in a single 5-day trip. Pick one region to avoid spending half your vacation trapped in a cab.

Best Time to Visit

Uttarakhand completely transforms depending on the month you pick. If you want blooming rhododendrons and pleasant valley walks, aim for March to June. If you want blinding white snow and frozen waterfalls, January is unbeatable.

Monsoons (July to August) are notorious for landslides, especially along the Char Dham routes. Unless you enjoy being stuck behind a rockslide for six hours, avoid the hills during peak rains.

How to Reach Uttarakhand from Mumbai

Getting out of Maharashtra and into the mountains requires a bit of chess strategy. You have two main pathways: flying or taking the train.

By Air

There are no direct flights from Mumbai (BOM) to Dehradun (DED). You will catch a morning flight with a quick layover in New Delhi (DEL) via IndiGo or Air India. Total travel time is around 5 to 6 hours if you book a tight connection.

By Train

The classic budget route is boarding the BDTS HW Express (19019) from Bandra Terminus to Haridwar, taking roughly 28 hours. Alternatively, take the Rajdhani or a fast daily flight to Delhi, then catch the overnight Mussoorie Express (14041) from Old Delhi to Dehradun.

Getting Around

Once you land in Dehradun or arrive at Haridwar station, public transport shifts to shared jeeps (Maxos) and state buses (UTC). However, for a stress-free trip from Mumbai, renting a self-drive car or booking a private cab (Dzire or Ertiga) for the duration of your trip is infinitely better.

Expect to pay around ₹2,500 to ₹3,500 per day for a hired cab inclusive of driver allowance and fuel. Ensure your driver is a local hill-driving veteran; Mumbai ghats do not prepare you for the sheer vertical drops of the Himalayas.

Top Things to Do

• White Water Rafting in Rishikesh: Tackle the 'Marine Drive' to 'Nim Beach' rapids (Grade III/IV) for under ₹1,500 per person.
• Cable Car Ride in Auli: Glide over Asia's longest ropeway to catch panoramic views of Nanda Devi.
• Evening Aarti at Har Ki Pauri: Witness the mesmerizing Ganga Aarti in Haridwar without missing the spiritual energy.
• Wildlife Safari in Jim Corbett: Book an early morning Gypsy safari in the Dhikala or Bijrani zone.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Skip the overcrowded Mall Roads of Nainital and Mussoorie. Head here instead:

• Chopta: Dubbed the 'Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand', serving as the base trek for Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple in the world.
• Sankri: A sleepy hamlet nestled in the Uttarkashi district, far away from commercial tourism, offering pristine pine forests.
• Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary: Stay inside the Zero Point sanctuary for unobstructed 300-degree Himalayan views.

Accommodation Guide

Uttarakhand offers everything from backpacker hostels to ultra-luxury heritage estates.

• Hostels: Zostel (Rishikesh, Mukteshwar) cost around ₹600–₹1,000 per bed.
• Mid-Range Hotels: Sterling or Lemon Tree properties run about ₹3,500–₹6,000 per night.
• Luxury/Boutique: JW Marriott Walnut Grove in Mussoorie or Taj Corbett Resort start at ₹15,000+ per night.

Where to Eat

Mountain food is wholesome, warm, and comforting. Do not leave without trying Aloo ke Gutke (spiced potatoes), Bhang ki Chutney, Kafuli (spinach and fenugreek curry), and hot steaming Mandua ki Roti.

• In Rishikesh: Visit Little Buddha Cafe for sunset views over the Ganges and great wood-fired pizza.
• In Dehradun: Stop by Kalsang for authentic Tibetan momos and thukpa.
• In Landour: Grab a bun maska and ginger tea at the legendary Landour Bakehouse.

Budget Breakdown

Here is what a realistic 7-day Uttarakhand trip from Mumbai looks like per person (excluding flights/trains from Mumbai):

Packing Checklist

Coming from Mumbai means your body is used to coastal heat. The mountains drop in temperature rapidly after sunset.

• Thermal innerwear (essential even in spring evenings).
• Sturdy trekking boots with high ankle support (Decathlon Quechua recommended).
• Windproof and waterproof jacket (Gore-Tex or equivalent).
• Power banks (cold drains phone batteries fast).
• Universal medication for motion sickness and altitude adjustment.

Common Mistake: Packing heavy denim and sneakers. Jeans get soaked instantly in mountain drizzles and take days to dry. Stick to dry-fit track pants and moisture-wicking layers.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

• Altitude Sickness (AMS): Do not rush straight to 10,000 feet on Day 1. Spend your first night at lower elevations like Rishikesh or Dehradun.
• Road Safety: Avoid driving at night on mountain edges. Fog and black ice make hairpin bends treacherous.
• Cash is King: Small homestays and roadside dhabas do not process digital payments reliably due to poor cellular range.

Nearby Attractions

If you have extra days, you can easily extend your trip by crossing over into Himachal Pradesh (via Chakrata) or exploring the borderlands of western Nepal if you possess the required permits.
