Packing Checklist

Clothing Essentials

• Light jackets or fleeces (for summer evenings)
• Heavy woolens, thermals, and windbreakers (for October to March)
• Comfortable walking shoes with decent traction for steep roads
• Quick-dry outfits if planning white-water rafting in Rishikesh

Toiletries & Health

• Sunscreen lotion (SPF 50+) and lip balm (mountain air dries skin quickly)

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake #1: Attempting to cover Mussoorie, Nainital, Corbett, and Auli all in a single 7-day trip. Mountain transit takes twice as long as plain highway driving. Stick to one region per week.

Common Mistake #2: Driving a rented car yourself without hill-driving experience. Mountain roads require strict lane discipline and engine braking skills.

• Motion Sickness: Take motion sickness medicine 30 minutes before starting any uphill car ride from Dehradun or Kathgodam.
• Monsoon Driving: Avoid traveling during peak monsoon (July & August) along active landslide zones like the Dehradun-Mussoorie route or the stretch near Joshimath.
• Keep Cash Handy: ATMs in smaller hill villages often run out of cash or lose network connectivity. Carry sufficient INR cash.

Nearby Attractions

• Tehri Dam: Located 2.5 hours from Rishikesh, famous for jet-skiing and banana boat rides on the massive blue reservoir.
• Auli: India's premier ski resort village, reachable via ropeway from Joshiamth.
• Chakrata: A serene, non-commercialized hill station 80 km from Dehradun, famous for Tiger Falls.
